I have to ask one question after seeing the performance yesterday at Kings Cross Theatre in London:
Is it just me???
After the conclusion of what I felt to be at best an insipid performance over a dreadful sounding PA system that barked at me all evening and some of the worst singing I have ever heard combined with a portrayal of TJ Newton as a pathetic, whining alcoholic at total odds with the closing scenes in TMWFTE I was stunned when the audience gave it a standing ovation at the close and can only think that they were applauding Bowie's career and memory rather than the actual show they had just witnessed.
Maybe it is just me - perhaps I just don't get the whole musical format, perhaps I expected too much (although I deliberately avoided reading any reviews until this morning) but I fail to see how Hall's whiny performance can possibly be described as "sounds spookily like Bowie" [url]http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/event/article-3928146/Lazarus-review-Not-Bowie-breathe-life-this.html [/url] or Caruso's scratchy warbling as being "a big voice" either. Perhaps it was the PA system, or the mix (I found the overall sound dreadfully reminiscent of a low-key live venue) or even the band who gave me the distinct impression of going through the motions, playing these wonderful songs in such a lifeless and emotionless interpretation as if they all had somewhere else - anywhere else - they would rather be.
Please don't get me wrong - I went there last night wanting to really like this and throughout the whole thing I was continually looking for something to like and found it in Amy Lennox's performance but for me this was the only shining light in Enda Walsh's muddled, lackluster script that seemed to exist in the same way as an opera does - a link between the songs.
Perhaps the best way to describe my overall impression last night can be summed up in one word:
Underwhelmed.
