As a ‘collector’ of the music more so than the artefacts, I often wonder how people feel about it themselves ? I collect different versions strictly because each one is unique or is available in different quality. A good example is the ‘David Live’ album. I bought the album as originally released, then upgraded to the CD version for the better sound quality as well as the bonus tracks. Then, of course, the whole album was remixed with even more bonus tracks and made available not only on Cd but also as a 5.1 mix. Then last year, a Hi Res version of the original album mix was released, and finally today, the Hi Res version of the remix is released. So in all there are quite a number of different versions available. But with the ‘remix’ a whole host of tracks saw the light of day and the cost of buying the remix is negligeble.
Put that in stark contrast to ‘acetate’ of, I think it was ‘Liza Jane’ that sold recently for £10,000 plus !  This acetate has the normal bog standard version of the song that anyone can buy on cd. So my question is, would you part with £10,000 for an acetate like this or rather have an unreleased song or an unreleased version of a song for the same money over the acetate ? Personally, I can’t see any value in an artefact like an acetate with a standard version on it.
Of course, buying something that is signed has a value as well as an emotional value, so I understand that. And promotional items that are unique I can understand too, but a standard version of a song for £10, 000 ???

I only really collect the songs, but I know I'm way out of line with many of the others here and on other Bowie fan sites.  I feel aggrieved at the over-proliferation of versions of David Live (even though it's one of my favourite DB albums), when at heart, it's just the same songs, once we got to the 2005 release.  Could I tell the difference between the two versions of Ziggy in Five Years?  Could I hell as like.  Did I care?  Only because it represented a lost opportunity to have something more interesting in the box.

So no, can't see any point at spending ten grand for a Liza Jane acetate - it's just the same song (but with more crackles) and I've already got it more than once.  But the Toy version counts as properly different to me, so worthwhile.

Over at Illustrated Discography there's a discussion about Who Can I Be Now, and, if I remember rightly, that one of the versions of Golden Years is half a second longer than a previous release.  WTF!

With David's death, what would really appeal to me (and I'm sure many others) would be boxed sets of recordings from tours (there was a great one from Yes, a couple of years back).  That would be worth the spend.

Don't blame me, I didn't do it!

I've got things you can't tell the difference in sound they are the
same albums WTF was I thinking
2 x London Boy cd's Different covers due to labels  Karussell, Spectrum
4 x Reality cd Australian, English & Tour all have different bonus disc and then 1 in box set
then get same books
like 1982 & 84 reprints of Bowie in his own words just have different covers,
1980, 84, 88 David Bowie Black Book as each updated then the 2013 thought might be but is just a 88 reprint, I probably have only read the first one back when I bought it in 80

no way 10k for any 1 thing even a rarity like if it was signed
scary enough thinking what collections worth
lost a lot of books all my vinyl, boots, traded tapes & posters back in '84 wasn't insured,
and what it's taken to build up again to have something that valuable and chance to lose it, bad enough when hdd crashes and lose stuff just hope it's still active on a tracker, seen value of some of my stuff selling on Amazon crazy a 80's book for NZ$1100
a recent (bootleg) dvd I bought in local retail chain store for NZ$10 on discogs for NZ$100 within a couple of months

in all honesty Us Guys that PAY far way more for some HD lossless and buying what stuff we already have on an album are crazy me included
I bought something then thought it didn't sound that much better than the mp3 I had of it or even the original album you had to sit down and listen to hear and enjoy the difference who wants to do that all day long with everything you buy, aren't you usually doing other things like on computer when it's really a noise in the background or you're singing jumping around playing air guitar to it
I had a recording pulled somewhere as it was lossy but it's only recording of the show WTF
Isn't any recording better than no recording, and starting to think before making that extra purchase
Even thinking wish I hadn't started on these box sets they're only official again
when they get to Outside will they make another Bowie Box Set (Outside - Reality) just with a Recall cd and Book and call it something different and how often will I look through the books
gathering by ones still sealed on my bookshelf and only reasons I unsealed this Who Can I Be Now was where it came from, maybe it being counterfeit otherwise that may of been left sealed
I've got to now stop myself buying books I don't read, I've got at least 2 books on pre order Pocket Bowie Wisdom, which is now in transit. Buckley's  Strange Fascination (2016) wonder how much it's been updated and I'll never read it my 2000 version has been packed away for years with Peg's The Complete David Bowie (2006) which I just received the 2016

But have to limit myself to different Items and collectables i.e Royal Mail Stamps
but not all the other countries that have now put out stamps as well, one worked out $26 freight

Bless the Tapers and Uploaders they make the Music Live

I agree with Mark. When was younger I was a completist, both in terms of the music and of the artefacts. Now, I'm still a completist, but only in terms of the music. I want every note that was ever recorded, or is available,  and really don't care about the artefacts, especially if it's just a new package for a recording I already have.

When it comes to the music though - I want it all. If there are six available recordings of a given show, I want all six - regardless of the recording quality (or lack thereof).

JanErik has plans to dump inferior recordings, keeping only the best recordings of a given show. Personally, I wish he wouldn't dump anything - because I want all of the recordings, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. My unsolited advice would be to dump the actual recordings if they're stored somewhere, but keep everything that's on the tracker right where it is, and let the users decide what they want to download. I can't be the only completist around here.

...and then my mind split open.

Collecting is interesting, there are so many ways to do it.

I want to have everything that Bowie released officially, I don't need more than one of each, but that said I would like to have one on vinyl and one digitally, There are a cpl of records I have more than one of even thou the only difference is the country they are pressed in, or sometimes I have found a good early press, I prefer to have it as it sounded when released, I am for the most part not a fan of remastering, specially with Bowie where every remastering seems to be a downgrade. When standing in a record store with one of my favourite albums in my hand it hard not to buy it again. When I have multiple CDs of the same it because of the extras like the 3 Reality CDs I have, one was the deluxe, two have concerts attached, that I will do to have it all, there is still some stuff I don't have - the hunt goes on.

I want all the demos out takes and stuff like that, downloads are sufficient.

When it comes to the concerts I manly want the ones I have attended and the best sounding concerts, but that said sometimes I just want one of each and end up with a lot of concerts that I wont be listening to. I have made a rating system so when I look at the concerts in Itunes I know what is worth listening to. And having a lot of concerts off course also gives me a good reason for my cover design hobby :D . I think it is nice if all the different versions are available here, so the ones that want to have each one can get that, as long as the best one is clearly marked. It might be a question of storage thou.

When it comes to the books and merchandise, I have some but not large piles of it, I don't need to read the same story about Bowie's life again again, done that, some of the photo books that have been published I would like but they most are just stupidly expensive. Being designed as an instant rarity printed in the thousand! It does not make sense to me. That said there are off course stuff I would like I don't have I would love to have like certain posters but manly something signed by the man. Even if I had the money I would not buy that Liza Jane acetate, For that amount you could properly get or something close to getting the complete Bowie first press vinyl collection in mint condition (now there is a wet dream). I miss going to the record stores when I was a teen in the 80's when all of Bowie's records was available at normal record prices, collections were cheaper as they were meant to get a new audience hooked, and not just made for the ones who have it all already like they do today.

It's a question of storage because of samples and streaming. Most trackers, which don't do that stuff, store nothing. Given the choice between having samples/streaming or having more versions on the tracker, I'd go with the extra versions every time - because I have no use for streaming a show. I'd rather download it and have it in my colection.

...and then my mind split open.

I don't use the streaming myself, and only used the samples a cpl of times, I usually just trust the written info. If its a choice I prefer more versions over streaming. Like you I download, and I have fun doing my archive.
