I agree the 24/96 khz rip is good, but not awesome.
It is probably due to turntable that was used, maybe it was a turntable with a usb connection, them turntables are generally poor due to their cartridges and stylus.
Oh well, it's better than nothing ( we have just wait and sit tight for a CD release)

Shouldn't be anything wrong with the equipment used:

Quote:

Condition: NM (ripped on first play)

Record cleaned with a KAB EV-1 prior to ripping.

Equipment used:
Custom Lenco L-70 (heavy birch plinth, PTP4 top plate) on an isolation sandbox
Jelco SA-750E tonearm
Denon DL-103R cartridge with an aftermarket aluminum Midas body
Musical Surroundings Phonomena II pre-amp
E-Mu 0202 USB ADC
Audio captured using the e-Mu ASIO driver for Windows.

24/96 wav captured in Audacity
Post-processing in ClickRepair and Izotope RX 5 Advanced

I'm no expert in turntables, but with some googling it seems like all of the equipment used are top notch. (Maybe apart from the operating system...)

I've listened to this a number of times over the last 2 days, I burned to a DVD-Audio and listened on a 5.1 system Blu-ray player and it sounds superb.

lol...I am grateful for the upload, very grateful indeed, but I am a digital freak and waiting patiently for a cd release, I'm not a vinyl fan anymore (I do miss the LP sized covers though).

could be some of the post processing he did on the recording.

Isn't it funny, we are waiting for years to get this released in better quality than we already have,
then it is there and immediately we see some moaning that it should be of better quality....

I'm with You Steveboy, to my ears it is real good, but may be some day we even get a better version,
but so far......we have this.....            8o     B)

The rip the guy did in his isolation sandbox is good enough for me.

I have downloaded a 16 khz rip from mygully.com, which sounds better on my sound system than the discussed 24 khz rip.

I have a few different ones now and they do vary in quality, I think the guy may have over post processed the 24 kHz rip.

That is a little strange...

It is the same rip. Same info file (apart from the 16-44 being transcoded) and the exactly same length in  milliseconds.

Jan-Erik, I downloaded the 24-96 torrent from Extratorrent. The file was 2GB.

Just checked out Extratorrent. This is also the same version. I downloaded "Time" to check, and it has the same ffp as the others.
It originated on Apollo posted by the ripper in both 24-96 and 16-44 (and also MP3 versions).
From there it has spread elsewhere.

So far the 24 bit version has been found Apollo, Demonoid, Usenet and now Extratorrent.
The 16 bit transcoded version on Apollo and mygully.com
MP3 transcoded on Apollo, mygully.com and usenet.

Check the 2 versions you have, they should have the exactly same length in milliseconds :)

Yes, that is another version and he posted it in 16/44.

Who hears "Hey, you like-a ladies' dresses, ah?" in the middle of Moonage Daydream? Sounds to me like it's either a more-or-less-off-mic comment from Bowie that has been given a sonic boost, or it's been spliced in from the missing banter. Most odd!

Yep I get that quite clear on the 24/96 version not bothered with the other versions, quite happy with the one from Apollo.

I noticed that when I first played it a few days ago. Wish that had been left out, it jars a bit halfway through a song. (It's at 2:32 for those that are interested).

Odd that the comments between songs were edited out and that bit was put in. I used Audacity to put the long introduction and the missing comments, " ... sixteen inch heels, no fall down ..", " rock 'n' rolly in the alley", " .. now you're gonna see elephants .." and so on, back in where they should be.

On first hearing it I thought Cracked Actor sounded a bit lacklustre. I'd recently been listening to this version   http://www.davidbowieworld.nl/video/audio-david-bowie-live-in-los-angeles-1974/  but got Cracked Actor from a link that briefly appeared on the Steve Hoffman website at about 4.00 a.m. on Wednesday morning. That link was only to an mp3 file but subsequent FLAC downloads, as mentioned in various posts above, do sound much better.

I don't suppose Tony Visconti can be persuaded to add the missing comments back in for the inevitable CD release can he?
