Had anyone got a copy of the new mixes on Blu-ray? If so, any thoughts on the content, or the packaging?

I'm a bit underwhelmed by the packaging, which is a slim, un-laminated cardboard gatefold, in shrinkwrap with a hype sticker.

I use a PS5 as a player; popping the disc in the drive and pressing play launches a lurid retro warning with some American logo shit, followed by a Parlophone bumper before the opening presentation sequence lands on the navigation menu.

There are just two options: 2024 Mixes, and Original 1972 Stereo Mix.

The 1972 Stereo Mix offers 192/24 and 48/24, along with Tracklist, Audio Options and Close — for discussion of the latter, read on.

Selecting the 2024 Mixes opens a menu with five options:

* Play 2024 Dolby Atmos Mix
* Play 2024 Stereo Mix (96/24 PCM)
* Track List
* Audio Options
* Close

The final three seem redundant — poor authoring? flawed flowchart? — as playing either mix should provide a track list, "audio options" pointlessly repeats the Atmos/Stereo option, while "close" shouldn't be needed as the "back" button on the remote should return the user to the previous menu. Unfortunately, however, it doesn't, so the user has to use the controller to navigate to "Close" in order to close the menu.

Another irritating aspect of the flawed navigation/menu system is that the user has to use a PS5 controller!

What the actual AF!?

My television remote works fine for audio on everything else, but due to poor authoring, the user has to have a "square" and a "triangle" key to access the navigation menu!

Another gripe, which may be idiosyncratic to my set-up, is that the PS5 will only play the Atmos mix while the audio settings are in passthrough mode — this means the user gets silence when attempting to play the stereo mixes. To actually hear the stereo mixes, the user has to leave the navigation menu, go into audio settings, and change "passthrough" to auto. Why doesn't the disc "pass through" the stereo mix? Is this also poor authoring, or is it a symptom of using a PS5 attached to a Samsung television hooked-up to a Sonos audio rig? Either way, it's another annoying feature of this latest re-issue of the 52-year-old Ziggy Stardust album.

The Atmos mix sounds fine btw, separation, and all that, clarity of instruments etc., but the experience is diminished by all the foregoing, and a few nice transitions between images from the Heddon Street photo shoot does little to alleviate the sense of inadequate authoring of this latest bit of product to fall off the assembly line.

Bong-bong ...

Wring-out yer dead ...

0, zero, Nil points for the packaging. Listened to the Stereo mix it's OK I suppose. Will hopefully listen to the Atmos via 5.1 tomorrow.

you still only have two ears
it's not new material
and all this talk
of different formats
make me want to spit a bubble towards the centre of the screen
what do you think about Young Americans as a bunch of 12'' Singles ?
all @45RPM so they become Disco Mixes by doing nothing ??

so U do
do you find them 'flat' ?

"I saw it as a challenge from David."
'coz I found a way to convert the hour of SHHHHHHHH that some were moaning about
into something listenable
and all on free apps
I was quite serious about the 2/3 x 12'' idea btw.
There was a fashion from some labels to release that way.
the only problem is they tend to be 33rpm
which defeats the purpose
