For those not aware of the connection, I thought I should explain why I, and others, upload Lou Reed, Velvet Underground and John Cale torrents to a Bowie torrent site.

In 1971, Andy Warhol gave an acetate of the VU's first album to Bowie's then-manager Tony DeFries, who in turn gave it to David. Upon hearing it, Bowie found the piece of the puzzle he had been looking for. Combining that with his earlier influences and that which he knew instinctively, he created the sound of Ziggy Stardust- the album and tour which made David Bowie a global superstar. From that time on, he cited the VU, and particularly Lou Reed, as his primary influence, as did many of the people David collaborated with, such as Brian Eno and Iggy Pop.

Eno famously said "Not many people bought the VU's albums or saw them live, but those who did went out and started a band." David himself began calling Lou "Maestro."

David always felt that he owed Lou a debt, which is why he produced Lou's "Transformer" album with Mick Ronson - both of whom also played on the album, and why he played two VU songs, "White Light / White Heat" and "Waiting fo the Man" in shows throughout his career, mostly with his own arrangements, making the songs his own. Both were written by Lou Reed.

Lou and David remained friends throughout their lives.

RIP Lewis Alan Reed and David Robert Jones. Every band worth listening to since 1967 owes you a debt.

I, and countless millions of others worldwide, miss both of you.

Erm, David covered Waiting for My Man in 1967, and Little Toy Soldier from the same year freely referenced Venus in Furs.

I'm pretty sure it was Kenneth Pitt who had the VU acetate that David got to hear?

Could be, and it would make more sense. We never actually discussed it

I think the 3 last torrents should be removed. Bowie is not involved.

There is a category for other artists, and the tracker contains torrents by Iggy, Lou, VU, Eno, Lennon and many others who collaborated with, influenced, or were influenced by Bowie. If you want to truly understand who Bowie was and why he made the art he made, it's essential to understand their work as well. We set this site up this way for a reason.

Thanks for your opinion.

I think this is a great thread and need exploring a little bit more. I recently downloaded a few Bob Dylan shows from 'The Rolling Thunder Tour' 1975-76 which includes Mick Ronson in the band, no I am not a Dylan fan but I am a Ronno fan, the shows downloaded were excellent soundboards, would anybody be interested in these on this site ?? or you can search 'The traders Den' for them.

I also have some Ronno with Ian Hunter as the Hunter/Ronson band and Ronson solo from 74/75 but I think they may already be here.

There's also Ronson with T Bone Burnett [who ever he may be]

Yeah, sure. I think there'd be interest if you emphasized the Ronson part in the the title of the torrent and the info file. We wouldn't want a Dylan flood here, but the stuff with Ronno? Sure, at least in my opinion.

Anything Bowie related is, and should be, fine here.

Oh, and T Bone Burnett is an American Folk Rocker who also does a lot of film scores and has played on countless artist's albums.

Edit: As for Ian Hunter, Bowie and Lou saved Mott's ass when they jumped in to re-establish them as someone worth listening to. David gave them "All the Young Dudes," which he also produced, and Lou recorded a new vocal track for "Sweet Jane" that Hunter could listen to in his headphones and mimic for the recording sessions. He just couldn't get the timing right on his own, because the song is sang in a strange time signature that's different from the music. There's another Bowie connection for you.

To be honest I would find it a "willful default" not to post any Bowie related stuff here.

Bowie who sucked in any useful influence he could get from others and at the same time inspired loads of other artists.

I would also include Roxy Music who were the only other "sophisticated" glam rock band (but this is not a very fair term to describe their music) besides Bowie in the early 70's and who had some concerts as opener for Bowie at that time. Of course Eno was a later Bowie collaborator and Tin Machine played their If There Is Something (even if I prefer the original).

Also the music of Neu! and their head Michael Rother (+ Cluster/Harmonia) had a big influence on the Berlin trilogy.

And list continues, though there are more people on it than mentioned here. Fripp. Kevin Ayers. Hell, Little Richard.

Note: Fripp is on the NAB list and can't be uploaded here.

But what if Bowie would have made the same with his live recordings? Wouldn't that be exactly what we have always dreamt of?

Released cleaned up live shows?  Sure, that would have been great, though no act, with the exception of the Grateful Dead, has ever recorded every show they ever played.

Some have been released, but there will always be shows that weren't professionally recorded, or that the artist just wasn't satisfied with. That's where we come in, I suppose.

I didn't say cleaned up shows, maybe you don't know what has been released from King Crimson, a lot of it is like the stuff we are posting here, just very rough and very authentic

I haven't run into those yet. Are they SBD at least, or is he snapping up audience recordings?

Wow Most artists do whatever they can to present their work in the best possible light. Surprising that Fripp would stoop so low.

I think this discussion will lead to no point.
Btw do we have a NAB list here? I know the one from Dime and there only King Crimson is on the NAB list, not Fripp.
There are also shows with Fripp as a side artist like some Blondie shows where he played on some tracks (for instance Heroes). These could be upped here anyway.
