I dont think ATYD was on the Ktel 'Best of Bowie'

(The 'Sax Version' of 'John Im only Dancing' was, though)

I'm afraid ATYD was not on any format of the K-Tel album. Again, the sax version of John IOD was.

Think you are referring to the version on a U.S. edition of the Mott The Hoople album
"All The Young Dudes" that has 7 bonus tracks.

The credits say
David Bowie - lead, chorus & backing vocals
Mick Ralphs - chorus vocals
Ian Hunter - chorus rap
The musicians were Mott
& it was produced by Bowie as was the whole album

It sounds very much to me as the Mott Version but with a guide lead vocal from Bowie
for Ian Hunter to follow.

Check it here:

The 'SAX Version' of ATYD (that CraigV posted above) is on 'The Best of David Bowie 1969 - 1974' compilation from 1997,(and is probably the same as the version on Aladdin Sane anniversary Issue.

So Bofinken57 - Now that you've found the version you had lost, is it the same as this one?

Just to add more confusion, there is a version of ATYD on the "Nothing Has Changed" greatest hits CDs and LPs.  I don't know if this is the same.  B)

Sounds to me like you mean the Freddie Mercury tribute concert version by Queen with Hunter on lead vocals Ronson on guitar and Bowie on sax and vocals  https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi64JnP5vPbAhXNa8AKHRkECZ8QwqsBCCwwAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DBLCKnlSZANo&usg=AOvVaw0BwH8TAWNcuW0VND0J284j

Aha, but that is not what you said originally. It was never on the K-Tel Best of Bowie album, but you say it was on a various artists K-Tel album. I cannot see this, as it was still being distributed on bootlegs until it was finally released (albeit semi-officially) on RarestOneBowie in 1995. It then appeared on;

Best of David Bowie 1969-1974
Aladdin Sane 30th Anniversary
Nothing Has Changed (2cd and 3cd versions)
Bowie Legacy (in stereo)

I have never seen one reference to an official release on a K-Tel album. I'd love to know the title of that album if you have it.
