Greetings everyone!

Do we have the complete sources to the Bowie at the Beeb release? I'd love to collect the 'complete' set

There are so many of these floating around it's difficult to know quite where to start, but I will try. If I forget any, someone please chip in - so here we go.

Starting off with the big compilations:
1 - The Ultimate BBC Radio Recording Sessions (Magic Bus 8CD LongBox)
2 - The Complete BBC Sessions (fan compilation, 10 CD's)
These are as close to getting everything in one place as you will find and I can particularly recommend the Magic Bus set - you will not get these here however, as there are so many now officially released.

Now we will move into the other sets on bootleg:
Firstly - The Ziggy era
01 - The Lost Beeb Tapes (1967-1972) (Godfather Records GR 375)
02 - Ziggy In Wonderland (1967-1972)
03 - A Crash Course For The Ravers (1969-1972)
04 - The Essential David Bowie (3CD set EDB 001/002/003) (1969-1972) - superb quality
Vol. 1 - Emerged From Shadows
    Vol. 2 - Kiss The Viper's Fang
    Vol. 3 - Nobody's Children
05 - NMC BBC Sessions 1969-1972 (3CD Australian set, scheduled for official release but canned
at the last minute, this set is not the same as "The Essential David Bowie" which is often
    mistaken as the NMC set)
06 - The NMC Project Sampler (famous for having a superb quality version of 'Hang Onto
    Yourself'
from the 'lost session' of January 11, 1972 which was wiped by the BBC after broadcast)
07 - The Rise And Rise Of Ziggy Stardust (4CD Shout To The Top STTP 086/087, 088/089)
08 - The Remains From The Rise Of Ziggy Stardust (The Unissued 1967-1972 BBC Sessions) (1969-
1972) (2CD set consisting of the material not on the 4CD set)
09 - Paris Bye Ta-Ta (Paris Theatre, London 5th February 1970)
10 - The Day And The Moon (Paris Theatre, London 5th February 1970) - better quality than the
above but very much incomplete with only 8 tracks as opposed to 13 on the 'Paris Bye Ta-
    Ta' set)
11 - White Light White Heat (1970-1972) (Swinging Pig TSP-CD-053)
12 - In Concert at Paris Theatre (BBC Transcription Disc) from 5th June 1971
13 - The Year Of The Spiders (1972) (Switch On! Devil KWSK 99-03)
14 - Russell Harty Plus (1973 with 2 tracks & an interview)

There was a lapse now until 1997, where we take up the story again:
15 - Changesnowbowie (Studio Instrumental Rentals, NYC) (Wardour-256) full & complete.
16 - Changesnowbowie (Arthur Productions Longbox) - incomplete
17 - BBC 50th Birthday Broadcast - the Radio 1 broadcast of the now famous Acoustic Session
Of all the versions of this floating around, only the wardour-256 set is full and
complete. All of the others have missing tracks because the BBC did not broadcast
everything recorded on the 3rd & 4th of January 1997.
18 - Out Of The Jungle - a compilation of 9 tracks from the January 8th broadcast plus for some
bizarre reason the 'Jungle Set' from Amsterdam Paradiso club on 10th June 1997 - bootlegs!
19 - The Mark & Lard Show, 25th October 1999 (5 tracks & interviews)
20 - Mark & Lard & Billy Bragg - as above but with the inclusion of 2 tracks & an interview
from the Billy Bragg show on BBC TV, 6th November 1999
21 - Maida Vale Studios 18th September 2002.
A - An Evening With David Bowie (BOWEVEN2002) - all 10 songs plus 2 bonus from the
Parkinson Show on 19th September & 3 from 'Friday Night with Jonathan Ross' on 5th July
B - Back At The Beeb (just the 10 songs played, introduced by Jonathan Ross)
C - BBC Live 2002 (Wardour-190 bonus disc, complete with between song chat)
22 - The Parkinson Show, 18 September 2002 - 2 songs & interviews
23 - Riverside Studios, London 8th September 2002 - superb FM broadcast of the Reality album
played live plus a 3 song encore
24 - BBC Sessions 1969-1972 (David Bowie Archive Series 2CD, DBAS02)
25 - The Complete Unreleased BBC Radio Sessions 1967-1972 & other media rarities
(Fan compilation from various sources - well worth tracking down although on checking this
appears to be identical to "The Lost Sessions" Leftfield Media 2CD set)

On the Official line, we have the EMI Sampler (BEEBPRO 6872) with 8 tracks, oddly enough (if memory serves) not all were included on the official 2CD release.
There is also the 'limited' 3rd CD of the official set featuring 2/3 of the show recorded on 26 June 2000 - the day after Glastonbury, and for my money a far better performance, The official release is an edited remix by Mark Plati & we will cover the bootleg versions later.
The 4LP Box Set is different to the 2CD set as well, with the CD evrsions suffering from (IMO needless) over-aggressive limiting for extra volume, and a high res rip of the vinyl is recommended.

Another interesting release is the Leftfield Media 'The Lost Sessions' (LFM2CD582), which is strictly speaking not a BBC release as it includes Radio Caroline Sessions, as well as a couple of tracks from Trident Studios recorded in 1970.

Finally, the BBC Radio Theatre show from 26th June 2000.
To an invited audience, this to my mind blows the Glastonbury performance out of the water although you do not get the best feel of the show from the butchered official release - not only does this miss out a bunch of songs it also edits out all the between song chat that really make this show something special. The performance is outstanding & there is a 1 hour edited version with lossless sound on DVD-R - best to get the PAL version as the NTSC is usually at the wrong pitch & speed because of the frame rate conversions being badly done.
Most of the Bootleg 'complete' releases are either duff audience recordings or incorrect speed/pitch recordings from the OB truck (caused by bad transfers).

So what would I recommend?
1 - The Essential David Bowie 3CD
2 - The NMC BBC Sessions 3CD
3 - White Light White Heat
4 - The Ultimate BBC Radio Recording Sessions 8CD

I hope this helps.
One other thing. Most of the broadcast sessions were in Mono, with one exception - the session done acoustically with just Bowie & Ronno for 'Sounds Of The Seventies' on 21 September 1971, which were in stereo. That said, there are a fair number of the Ziggy era sessions that do exist in narrow stereo even though they were broadcast at the time in mono. I will make a list of these (to the best of my knowledge) and add it later.

If only someone has a copy of this one...Please PM me if you can help....
David Bowie & The Hype The day And The Moon (1970-02-05 BBC session) (re-master)
Sunday Show (05-02-70) And aired three days later.

01. Amsterdam
02. God Knows I’m Good
03. Buzz The Fuzz
04. Karma Man
05. London Bye Ta-Ta
06. An Occasional Dream
07. The Width Of A Circle
08. Janine
09. The Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud
10. Unwashed And Somewhat Dazed
11. Fill Your Heart
12. Waiting For The Man
13. The Prettiest Star
14. Cygnet Committee
15. Memory Of A Free Festival

Performed by David Bowie and The Tony Visconti Trio (a.k.a. The Hype):
John Cambridge: drums;
Tony Visconti: bass;
Mick Ronson: guitar;
David Bowie: vocals and guitar.

Produced by Jeff Griffin. This probably is Bowie’s most interesting BBC recording, as he played a number of songs of which the only live version is available from this show:

I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.

Waiting For The Man wasn't broadcast and hasn't survived, so any boot claiming to include that version must have some other version instead. Also, the The Day And The Moon i know of doesn't include Memory Of A Free Festival.

@portlandbill, I have that one & will send immediately.
I also have another version - including MOAFF, but sadly not WFTM.
Will send that, too (it is on the Magic Bus longbox set)

EDIT.
There are 2 versions of 'The Day And The Moon' - one is very truncated, with only 8 tracks (the ones that are included on 'Bowie At The Beeb' are edited off) & the other one has 13 tracks. Both are from the 'Manic Depression CD016' release, with the shorter edit being another so-called 'remaster'.

Hello guys,
Just visited DavidBowieWorld.nl just to look up some info and found this following info:- Reference second paragraph.

https://www.davidbowieworld.nl/mijn-bootlegs-2-2/bbc-performance/attachment/14-2/

David Bowie & The Hype The day And The Moon (1970-02-05 BBC session) (re-master)

‘Waiting For The Man’ was recorded but not broadcast (and is now lost), while ‘Memory Of A Free Festival’ was edited down from 6’40” to 3’12”. The BBC didn’t include tracks from this show on their “Bowie At The Beeb” broadcast, because the master tape had accidentally been wiped. To everybody’s surprise, a cassette taped from the radio in 1970 surfaced in 1984. Nobody complained that the sound quality was rather poor, John Peel’s introductions had crudely been edited out and ‘Memory Of A Free Festival’ was missing altogether. The first bootleg LP issue in 1984 was No More Sleeping With Ken Pitt (Citizen Kane Records 001),re-released as We Were So Turned On (idem), and London Studios (idem). A year later, Janine (Fancy Records PCS 70, LP) appeared, on which the sound quality was much better and the original running order of the songs was restored. This album was reissued on CD as The Day And The Moon (Manic Depression CD 016); many re-releases have since followed, i.e. A Semi-Acoustic Love Affair (no label), which has been made from a cassette, and is not a straight copy of Janine.

As the master tape had been wiped, Bowie himself came to the rescue and offered his personal copy of the show for the Bowie At The Beeb CD. It is absolutely great to hear Amsterdam/God Knows I’m Good/The Width Of A Circle/Unwashed And Somewhat Slightly Dazed/Cygnet Commitee/Memory Of A Free Festival and John Peel’s commentary in (almost) impeccable sound quality. It certainly makes one long for a complete release one day!
Identifiers: most of the songs from this show are unique; the ones that are repeated in other sessions lack the plaudits of the audience.

I'm not sure how to interprete the above quote , does this mean David gave the BBC a full copy of the show inclusive of WFTM that would be a true source!!

Regards.
PB.

PS.. Very grateful to those who have helped with this request.

I'm afraid this is really the 18th January recording, although the sleevenotes state it to be from the 11th. That the BBC wiped the session would explain why the other tracks from the 11th are only available as off-air recordings.

Yeah, but I had it BEFORE WOAC was released, and the earlier version is actually better sounding (to me, anyway). Whilst I really do appreciate a lot of the material on WOAC the good stuff is predominantly the new mixes by Tony, and not the revamped & (badly) remastered BBC material.
Sorry, but this is really subjective I guess and I would think that the opinion will probably be split here - but as an example of the piss poor remasters, take a long, cold subjective look at Brilliant Live Adventures. In part great, in part average & in part just awful - and this is split in equal thirds for my money.
The Dallas show is not anything that special.
The Birmingham one was new to me so top marks.
Liveandwell.com is a remaster of an earlier release, and the earlier version not only sounds better to me but the remaster was also available a year before BLA started.
Phoenix 97 is superb, and again new to me so wonderful stuff.
Paris 99 was another reissued remaster, and the original Virgin version is much better as it leaves the between song chat alone (which makes the show - the chat being chopped out ruins the recording and makes it sound done 'by the numbers'
New York 99 was another remaster, and not only was it nothing new (same problems as Paris 99) but they even managed to repeat the error of using the wrong fecking version of 'Life On Mars'.

I bought all 6 in CD/Vinyl but I really do sometimes wonder why I care because it is apparent that Parlophone (or whoever is responsible for the programme) definitely doesn't. All they care about is your money.

Rant over.

Neil has made an apt point here.

Why are Bowie CDs *still* being compressed?

There is no need.

The loudness wars ended almost a decade ago - look it up. ISO could look it up too.

I bought the English Weather compilation on Ace recently, finally they hav relented on compressing their CDs, and this CD sounded great.

Anyone who doubts on this matter, just listen to CDs made, say, up to 1995 at the latest. Or try ripping CDs and looking at the waveforms to see if they are compressed, and taking a few moments to listen to the differences in a compressed and non compressed music files.

This is no longer 'rocket science' - anyone with a pc can do this sort of thing (or just with a CD player if you don't want to look at the waveforms - however Audacity is free and this sort of thing can be done very quickly and easily nowadadays).

Try listening to a compressed CD and see if you get headaches / earache.

Then go and listen to a natural, non-compressed CD, or maybe an LP.

It's not all about the 'excitement' of something being loud, you can turn the volume up yourself for that as and when you need.

Sadly, Stranger, the reason is still the dreaded ubiquitous CD changer - the cause of the Loudness Wars in the first place.
Why? because pre-CD Changers by the time you had unloaded one disc, loaded another & it started to play your ears had 'reset' from the previous disc. With the dreaded changers the swapover is almost instantaneous, so your ears don't get the necessary time to reset back to their default and none of the labels wanted to have the 'quietest disc' in the changer. It's really that simple and a catastrophic shame too as CD really could have been so good if only made properly in the first place - with no overcompression or limiting for volume.
