Reading over this news and sampling the earlier versions of the BBC recordings made me realize I really don’t like the “folky” David Bowie. It’s so earnest.

By the way, Tony-Tony-Tony Visconti-Visconti-Visconti has confirmed that the BBC set on disc 1 comes from his tape, not from Bowie’s tape, this time.

Tony: No, I recorded it directly from the output of a radio in London. My mom and dad lived in Brooklyn, NY. The quality is as good as you could get for the time, and it cleaned up very well for this little box set.

So I wonder what happened to Bowie's own tape which was allegedly used for the Bowie At The Beeb set? Bearing in mind that recording anything off the radio was a bit hit and miss in 1970, I hope Visconti's tape is at least as good as the source used 20 years ago.

The version in the 'official' version is of course incomplete.
There is a full length version already out there though - it's on the Magic Bus box set called 'The Ultimate BBC Radio Recording Sessions' and it is 100% complete with the between-track comments from both John Peel & Bowie still included (and I wager these are edited out on the new version).
I freely confess I am looking forward to this very much indeed - and I want to know where the 5.1 versions are, as Tony will have done them at the same time for all his remix work.

Nope.
That is not the one. From what I can see, that is the one below.
The Lost Sessions - Rare Radio Recordings
2018 Leftfield Media 2CD edition (LFM2CD582)

The one I am talking about is a 6CD Longbox Boxed Set, and the packaging is literally streets ahead of the official version with really good quality audio on the most part - the so-called 'lost session' of January 11 1972 is not great, taken as it must be from a radio recording (although some bugger somewhere must have the BBC Transcription disc lying about, as that is how it was all done back then).
Until this was announced though (Width Of A Circle) it was the only place I had ever seen a full length version of the Paris Theatre John Peel show.

This new release will be worthwhile for the new Visconti mixes and The Hype's BBC session in full. Everything else is a bonus, and I am certainly in - I also hope a 24/96 version is done.
Not bothering with 10" vinyl, as that is a cynical parlophone cash grab. If there was a complete vinyl edition I might go for it, but never in dribs & drabs.

Notes.
CD 1 is all straightforward material, available before but this release sets the tone very quickly as far as overall quality goes. Not only is the music here the best versions of each session available but the packaging also puts the official release to utter shame. It is in the "Long Box" format so loved by bootleggers these days (and oddly enough the Ryko releases back in the day were also available in Long Box editions for about 5 minutes) with a really nice 36 page booklet full of well chosen photos and a *lot* of session information as well, detailing not only band members but also the technical crews and sound mixers/engineers where known so the compilers have done their research well. I have not reproduced those details in this file because full art scans are included in the archive at 300DPI for better clarity.

CD2 is where it starts to get interesting, with the first of the 2 Paris Theatre shows in full taking up the entire CD - a good decision.

CD3 opens with the full session by "The Hype", almost progressive versions and a true classic. Superb quality throughout. Then comes the second - also complete - show from In Concert at the Paris Theatre (usually this one is missing at least 2 tracks as they are not on the BBC transcription disc so were not so much lost as never intended for broadcast in the first place)

CD4 begins with the only stereo session from the era, featuring Bowie & Ronson in full flow and some cracking acoustic renditions are on offer here. Nothing new, but taken with what comes next we sadly arrive at the only session in poor quality: The so-called "Lost Session" from 11 January 1972 and the introduction of Ziggy Stardust to the world now seems to be missing - someone must have a transcription disc of this.
The final set here is the one from a week later, and we are back to the usual quality of this set for the rest of the content.

CD5 continues with the balance of the Ziggy sessions & then jumps to Tin Machine.

CD6 is the specially recorded for the BBC Acoustic Session recorded during rehearsals for the Birthday gig (still officially unreleased) and it is great to have a full, complete version.

The last 2 discs are a strange mix. The Mark & Lard show has some fine playing & a great rendition of Drive-in Saturday, and it is also interesting that around this time Bowie was playing live some of the old 60's material (The London Boys, Can't Help Thinking About Me) presumably for the dropped "Toy" album. The final disc is a full on Heathen show where once again the live band are clearly superior to the studio cuts - why was the combination of Gail-Ann & Sterling never used in the Studio?

This is a great set that will enhance anybody's collection

Most of it is unreleased to be blunt.
All that was ever officially issued to date is the 2CD's and the 4LP set.
This new release will finally do the Paris Theatre in full (probably minus the chat) and The Hype's session in full (high time that was done officially, as it is bloody awesome).
All that is missing from the 6CD set is the 2000 Radio Theatre show.
