David Bowie's estate has sold the publishing rights to his "entire body of work" to Warner Chappell Music, including hundreds of songs such as Space Oddity, Changes and Let's Dance.

WCM now has global music publishing rights to his song catalogue, the singer's estate told the BBC.

With respect, that piece states that they have struck a deal with them, and talks about Warners working "in partnership" with the estate.

The fresh announcement is focussed on the actual sale of the catalogue from the estate to Warners.

Unfortunately those facts save me from making a laboured 'joke' about the sale being announced, then being made final, and like a house sale taking about a year to go through...

Main difference is probably two or three million for the legal teams

The 2013 arrangement was a licensing deal. Bowie's estate is not a music company and needed someone with expertise in all the things necessary to mix/remix, press and distribute material.

There are many different types of licensing... Mechanical License, Master License, Public Performance License, etc. The 2013 Warner deal may have only been a Mechanical License which allows reproduction of an artists material. I'm just guessing at that btw.

It was after that licensing deal that you started to see the album re-issues and era box sets.

The new deal just announced is a complete buy-out of the Bowie catalogue. Warner now owns all of the various licensing rights including Print, Theatrical and whatever else that might remain (it seems I'm forgetting one or two).

If they could stop compressing the stuff they released that would help.

Sadly, I'm 100% certain that was *their* idea to do that, and not Bowie's family / estate. :(

Yep, and with those dollar signs in their eyes, maybe the MSG or Paris 1976 recordings Tony Kaye mentioned may come out some time, along with many other things, perhaps.

Yah - the limiting for volume is absurd (I thought the 'loudness wars' were supposedly all done these days?) especially on the higher resolution versions where there is simply no need to go close to 0dBFS.

With precious cash given to me for Christmas and my birthday I had the opportunity to splash out for once.  Bowie has always been my Main Man but I feel that the re-packaging/re-selling exercise of the Era Box Sets has really short changed Bowie fans so I didn’t consider picking up any of the last three Era sets.

Instead I opted for the Ian Hunter Stranded In Reality Box Set - not cheap at £260 from Amazon but it was worth every penny.  It demonstrates perfectly how a box set should be done – it has 17 original albums on 19 discs many of which have bonus tracks; 9 CDs of rare and previously unreleased material; 2 dvds packed with hard to find promos and live stuff; a brilliant LP sized hardback book complete with Hunter’s own narrative on the tracks; a signed photo; a facsimile magazine with press cuttings from throughout Hunter’s solo career; and the presence of Mick Ronson is writ large across the whole thing.

This is a box set compiled with care, love and consideration for a loyal fan base.  Bowie’s executors and record company need look no further for an example of how things ought to have been done – in the words of the late Jim Bowen, “look at what you could have won!”

But did it, by any chance, come packaged in a speedboat?
