Hello,

I wanted to create this post to see what are your thoughts about which are the best cover band of Bowie around the world.

I heard about some David Bowie's cover bands:

1/ Aladdin Sane (Italy)
2/ Sapce Oddity David Brightons (California, USA)
3/ One from Denmark -> don't remember the name
4/ Changes (Mexico-Spain)
5/ Starman Bowie Tribute (New Jersey/NY, USA)
6/ Bowie Live - The Ultimate DB Tributte (Pennsylvania, USA)

Please don't hesitate to share your comments.

Fundamental issue with the question - it's a bit like the most enjoyable way to die or best way to be made bankrupt.  Tribute bands - parasitical scum.  I don't for one moment doubt that they can be great fun to participate in and to take pride in playing the songs well, but given a choice between going to watch one or pick my nose with a fork, I'd be straight to the cutlery drawer.

:?

Parasitical scum?

For centuries musicians have, for better or worse, been performing the work of other people, you know, composers, it's a time-honoured tradition to do so.

Though it's not necessary to wear shades like Miles, wear a powdered wig to resemble Mozart or get a blow-wave to pound the keys like Ludi Beethoven, it's fine to interpret these people. And it's also fine to do Width Of A Circle, for example, on bagpipes, but don't have a lightning bolt on your face, that's just a joke.

That actually sounds like we agree!  People who play David's music, perhaps give it their own vibe or sense of purpose, add something to the song - great.  It's then simply down to whether they make a good job of it or not.  Same as David himself - some covers great, some lousy.

Put a lightening bolt on your face and take money from people to watch you in your own private fantasy - parasitical scum.  All tribute acts, any artist, ditto.

I am with you 100% on this subject.
So-called 'tribute bands' make me want to throw up - why would you want to live someone else's life? For Money - that is the sole motivation with a lot of these.
If you are going to do a cover, that's fine - make it your own version (I have always wanted to hear a version of 'Downtown' done with 2 harmony guitars, bass & drums and rocked up, and there was a superb band in the 80's/90's called 'Paddy Goes To Holyhead' who were a full on covers band but in their own, utterly unapologetic way. They never tried to be anybody else & were seriously great onstage too).
But dressing up and pretending to be someone else is not a tribute, it's utterly and completely parasitic.

Maybe I am getting old, but as far as I am concerned these people should not be encouraged in any way

I'm currently negotiating with a Nottingham pub to put my band "Parasitical Scum" on in April.

But worry ye not, we'll only be doing Mott The Hoople and T.Rex songs.

We might do "The Mask" as an encore though. :)

I don't mind bands doing tributes or a cover set. But bands that dress up in Ziggy Outfits, Earthling Union Jack coat etc and try to reproduce each song note for note as it was on the record I absolutely loathe. They lack personality.

The cool thing about Bowie concerts was you never knew how the band would interpret the songs in a live situation. They never sounded exactly as on the album. Jean Genie was different each tour, same with staples as Scary Monsters, Stay and White Light. They would always find a rearrangement that suited the current live band.

IMHO that's why tribute acts never get the Bowie feel right.

I think you are taking the pi55 here - ever so gently, but definitely.
But just in case....please don't do this!
I know some would say it is slowhand, but for me Ian Hunter is really God....

If Ian Hunter is "God", thank Christ I'm an atheist.

And Clapton is a fool, and racist to boot.

Working on a Gary Glitter tune or two, he's done his time, "shopping for girls".

You must be from Liverpool, discouraging a man from going to work.... :warn in the name of love.

Please will you get a grip on reality here - Clapton a Racist? Based on WHAT, FFS! Something some arse wrote on Twatter? Also your inference about EC and young girls is libellous, pure and simple.
All this BULLSHIT about EC being a 'racist' and a 'conspiracy theorist' all started when he & Van Morrison spoke out against the so-called 'Covid Vaccines'
Clapton is one of the least racist people on this fucking planet, you muppet.
Stop believing everything you read on 'social' media & think for yourself rather than parroting what is currently getting certain people virtue points.

Settle down, you'll hurt yourself. And don't get personal, it makes you look like a fool when you are not in possession of the facts.

FACT. Clapton drunkenly (in the 70s) agreed with the British politician Enoch Powell that "coloured" immigrants should be repatriated.

FACT. Gary Glitter was busted for procuring and abusing girls. He is dead to me.

Read the post again, slowly, with your mouth closed if possible.

And I fucking love Ian Hunter more than you, if it's measurable.

Could not care less about Glitter.
Calling Clapton a racist for a comment made when pissed is just plain stupid though. Typical of the modern world - disagree with what I say & you must be a racist/mysogenist/phobist of some bloody sort.
Yet you all whine & complain when someone pulls you up on it.

Using the term 'racist' should be reserved for those who really are racists - otherwise you have nowhere left to go. It's you who needs to think about things, not me.

Sorry, and point well made.
I just get so worked up at the constant screams of 'racism' from certain types any time anybody says anything they do not like.
It used to be a thing we did, called 'debate', but requires freedom of speech to work properly and that is a thing of the past these days as 'freedom of speech' only now applies if you are in agreement with the progressives.

As if violence and anger (and threats) ever solved anything.

(Sorry for delay, we've been in in rehearsal).

So I recently went to a tribute band concert in my home town and recorded it, I'm not gonna torrent it as i know some people don't like the fact that this happens i'm not a lover of the Bowie Celebration stuff, this band were called 'Bowie Experience' not to be confused with 'The Bowie Experience' which is a different band, i'll leave it like that as there is some friction between them.

The capture was pretty good, possibly the best with this rig - CA11s connected to Zoom H2N.

There were plenty of costume changes from the Ziggy era, OGWT suit, Rebel Rebel promo outfit, LOM promo outfit, Sorrow 7 inch single outfit stripy suit. Set 2, Cracked actor jacket & skull, Serious Moonlight yellow suit ending in the long union Jack coat.

Here are links to the capture.
