Thank you so much.  :)
These sessions mysterious for me and my favorite era.
So far, I only knew some bits and pieces.

I like a lot the extra verse of Young Americans take 3 and the bossa nova rhythm (and that the "A Day In The Life" reference was right there at the beginning of the sessions)
And besides Shilling The Rubes with this melancholic voice and the verse melody of After Today (uptempo - I like this version better than the official one) which reminds me a bit Ashes To Ashes , Sweet Thing is superb... (the voice, Bowie's harmonies, the keyboard, the soaring guitar solo and the sax) wow! pure magic.
By the way, I think that the guitar lick was somehow borrowed for Donna Summer "My Baby Understands" (in place here this is piano); check on Bad Girls double-album. It's not a bad song by the way.

Do you think "drone number 1, ...etc..." is a connection to the SFI movie with Bruce Dern "Silent Running" by Douglas Trumbull. After all, David's son did some great SF movie (the first one "Movie", the other one "Source Code" was much more a revision of Code Quantum series, the third one was unfortunately plagued by the studio (was it Netflix ?).

By the way, on People On The Streets silver CD there was an Un.ID studio chat which seems to belong to the Y.Americans sessions and was  before the "common" "Can You Hear Me"  take 2 (even though it was not in place of this take) (which I tend to prefer to the original); any idea from which it comes from ?

There is also a bit of chats-Bowie rehearsing and learning to the choir the chorus of "Right", but I'm not sure that this footage was from the Y.Americans sessions; but close.

"John, I'm Only Dancing" is still not available in its entirety (and it's a great early take)

RupertPupkin

By the way.
Unless David Bowie and chums had a time-machine,
that isn't possible.
Young Americans was recorded in 1974.
Donna Summer's Bad Girls album was recorded in December 1978 — March 1979.
Patti Austin copying the YA 'sound'...I might believe 'ye.
:-@

Sorry I'm French and I know this is not an. excuse, I know Bad Girls was released several years after Diamond Dogs. I just wanted to point out that the Ava Cherry arrangement on guitar reminds me Donna Summer My Baby Understands (Bad Girls was release later - I know I know - and I think that they were inspired by the guitar arrangement of "Sweet Thing" because the piano intro of My Baby Understands is somehow close to "Sweet Thing"- which is one of my favorite Bowie's song by the way (the vocals, and the odd sounds through the end of the song which sounds like a modem)
"Sweet Thing" on Diamond Dogs is the song which announces in terms of vocals, arrangement, jazzy mood the Young Americans album...

So I'm guessing that The Gouster piano riff became recycled and developed for TVC-15...

Thanks for the linkage permanence. This is really essential and incredible stuff.

I too love this YA3 a whole lot. They're all having so much fun with it, following DB's lead who's really feeling this bit more 'Latin' take.

"Do youz do any Dead?"

so the snippet of "John, I'm Only Dancing" (early take)" which was "around" is on the other reel ?

I really enjoy the bossa-nova rhythm of these early takes of "Young Americans".
The highlight for me is Shilling The Rubes - the melancholic vocals just give me the chills. Superb melody. I only knew so far a snippet.

And Ava soul version of "Sweet Thing" with Bowie's for the vocal harmonies/chorus and this soaring guitar solo + saxophone is pure bliss.
Really this is a "plastic soul" alternative "Young Americans".

I can't believe why even Lazer/The Gouster was not included on the "The Gouster" official box set. I already knew everything on the box set (the amazing early take of "Right" (which I tend to prefer to the official/final album version was already on b00tlegs since decades)

the slight vinyl surface sound implies that this source comes from a needledrop, that's it ?

Thanks so much for this amazing share.

In the forum DBWW someone share another FLAC transfer

https://wetransfer.com/downloads/d6f0b4ca584c54c905cf38f0e7e9375f20220328150348/59965c

This could be the one to keep?

thanks.
this seem to be another remaster (24/44Khz) - track-length slightly differs, which implies that there has been a different pitch/speed correction than the wetransfer link shared in the shootbox by paulybauls (thank you by the way)

but the source is the same ? a needledrop ? which explain the slight vinyl surface sound.
Is this a vinyl bootleg ? I wonder if this is the case if the CD source will be pressed later.
That would be the same thing that happened with the Wish You Were Here and Animals studio sessions (as known as Extraction Tapes) first released on vinyl, before they were "liberated" later from a tape source.

What official Box Set of 'The Gouster'?
All we got was a wrongly named alternate album in an Era box (the working title of the project was never 'The Gouster', it was 'One Damn Song' - see the link included for details on the Sigma Sessions)
http://www.theyoungamerican.co.uk/sigma_sound_aug_sessions.htm

I am fully with you on 'Sweet Thing' though - the interplay between the Guitar (sounds like Earl Slick to me) and David's sax playing is superb.

As far as alternate takes, versions & mixes go there are several.
Win, Fascination & Right all had alternate (incorrect) mixes used on the Ryko edition of 'Young Americans' (RCD 10140) and this error was fixed on the AU20 'Golden Years' Ryko re-remaster set in addition to the bonus tracks 'Who Can I Be Now?', 'It's Gonna Be Me (without strings)' and the single 'John, I'm Only Dancing (again).
In addition to these there is still another version of 'Fascination', 'After Today (version 2)', 'I'm Divine', 'It's Gonna Be Me (with strings)', plus the version of 'Fascination' used on the Ryko 'Sound & Vision' compilation set (which is also included as an 'alternate ryko mix' on one of the bootleg sets and is identical to the incorrect version on the first Ryko CD of 'Young Americans' - RCD 10140)

This whole saga really is worthy of it's own, dedicated 'expanded edition' especially in light of the 2007 remix by Tony Visconti with the same tracklisting as the Ryko editions but with still different mixes. He also did the album in 5.1, and as far as I am aware this was never released on vinyl and was only available for about 5 minutes before going OOP.

Neil,  your post is really interesting.  I generally like the origjnal Ryko discs but their first Young Americans is a big fail because of the wrong mixes.  I have heard differing accounts of whether the AU20 really does have the corrected mixes, or not.

I would be tempted to get the AU20 if you (or anybody else that has it and has compared it) can definitely confirm it is different.  I know that Jeff Rougvie has said it was corrected but then I have seen other people just say the mixes were the same.

The AU20’s are really expensive and I don’t want to buy one just to hear some mild EQ changes.

Thanks for any guidance or confirmation that is possible.

I have the first RYKO CD.

But the early vocal mix of "Right" appears on the official box set. Before, this "Right" take (which I tend to prefer to the final album version) was available on several b00tlegs.
What I call "(The) Gouster" was the ad campaign which promoted the upcoming box set covered the Young Americans album.
https://pitchfork.com/news/66986-david-bowie-74-76-box-set-to-feature-unreleased-album-the-gouster/

When you look at the official artwork, with the title "Gouster" and "unreleased album" it was fair for us to wait something more than just some alternate mix with strings catalogued as "Gouster" (It's Gonna Be Me (with strings), etc...
Now this "Right" early take (marked as take 2) is included in the official box set if I'm not wrong.

- By the way, even though the sessions with John Lennon took place later, the 5.1 mix of "Across The Universe" has John Lennon talking near the end ": let me just drop in!" on "Across The Universe" - thus the mix is slightly longer.
