I can give facetiousness in spades too if I so choose - I am just glad for the goodies we do get, these days.

On the bright-ish side, any re-reissue / further revamp of the Hammersmith 73 concert - which is at least 50% likely now given the sanctioning of releasing The Jean Genie audio and video - *might* put some of the above right.I hope ...

As someone who didn't get the 2002 version of the Ziggy show I noticed how naked the Ziggy songs sounded in the documentary. Then I started going thru youtube and it became clear to me the original 80s release of the show had so many overdubs that were removed for that 2002 version. On the one side I'm happy that they went for the most authentic representation of the show and used that in this documentary. But I also really love that 80s release with the extre reverb and echo on the vocal in Moonage Daydream or the additional keyboards/synth parts on Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud (and My Death)..

Watched it tonight. As I'm living part time in Spain, me and my wife drove to Malaga to watch it. I assumed we would be two expats couples in an otherwise empty cinema. As Bowie and other northern music supposedly isn't that popular in southern Spain. I was wrong. It was packed on an average Tuesday night. After the movie people applauded. Not especially the movie but Bowie.
Overall i enjoyed the movie.

Which brings me right back to something we have sat down & discussed many times - all of this is just so damned subjective it's not funny, with one man's meat being another man's poison. There are also so many different / alternative mixes floating around of the '73 show now too.
The first one I ever heard was the 'His Masters Voice' on cassette tape bought at Wembley Market (before the 80's edition was even released), then the VHS 'HiFi Stereo' videocassette version (which had a different mix to the 2LP version, and not just in the huge edit on 'Width Of A Circle'!

Then we started to get 'remastered' versions, then the 2002 30th anniversary edition (and to this damned day we have still never got anything better than AC-bloody-3 versions of the 5.1 mix, which sounded exactly like a live PA system would have when I saw the film in the theatre shortly after the dreadful day - where is the full Blu-ray edition of this, please? It is long since past high time.

There is also the Italian TV version, again a different mix from the OB truck if memory serves plus we also have Robin's desk tape.
For all of the above, there will be some who love each one whilst not being fond of others and it is going to be different for us all. It's what makes this so hard, as nobody can please everyone all the time.

My dream is that they' ll issue one day an official of this concert without any remaster, just the real thing, a definitive version... I've always hated any official release of that show since I knew they changed the original.I love Robin' s version because of that, but it lacks the audience atmosphere of the official recording though... Having the real thing in top sound plus the atmosphere would be great, but I doubt that'll be the case one day... But maybe someone could remaster Robin's version adding the atmosphere of the official, don' t even know if that would be possible to do it...

What version of Sound + Vision do we have on the soundtrack? Also, who is the vocalist on Absolute Beginners snippet? It doesn't sound like Bowie.

I think the vocalist is Bowie but they changed the pitch for it to fit into whatever audio was played in the background? OR it could be someone from the movie?

Okay, I have finally sat down & tried to watch this film, and had to stop after just 30 minutes in.
It is an unmitigated clusterfuck of a disaster and I have cancelled my order for the Blu-ray version as I refuse to pay for such a disaster show.

I'll go through the positives to begin with - it was superb hearing the proper versions of the 'Wild-Eyed Dudes' medley complete with audible flutes & audience that took me back to the show I had the pleasure of being at, as well as the Beck guest appearance and again with the wonderful audience reaction to this and being able to hear the fans singing along was a definite first - why has this never been released in full? (all we have is the terrible 30th anniversary DVD version in Dolby Digital, which sounds godawful even compared to the version of the film I saw at the cinema after the dreadful day) It finally sounded like a live show mixed by someone who understood it.
It was superb seeing the footage from the ISOLAR show (Warszawa) - was this Earls Court?
That, my friends, is all.

Now let's look at the awful parts that made me turn it off.
1. Why were all the actual songs fragmented? I wanted to hear these new mixes (and oh, do I hope we get a Blu-ray of the show using these mixes, but I am not going to hold my breath) IN FULL - not a snippet here & another snippet there with those stupid and way, way too loud sound effects like the Martian War Machines from the 50's 'War Of The Worlds' film (what the fuck does that have to do with Bowie?) and the constant bastard helicopter noises, explosions, zapping noises and so on ad nauseam?
This absolutely ruined the whole thing for me and made it exasperating in the extreme.

2. What happened with the colour grade? I honestly thought my TV settings were up the swanney it was that over-saturated. Whoever signed off on this must have been blind. Everything was far, far too over-done. If the effect was to look somehow 'other worldly' then they failed dismally as it ended up looking like something knocked up on an iPhone or similar rather than a serious production.

3. The sync issues. This was literally all over the place so badly it's not even funny. Especially noticeable with the 1974 footage allegedly from Buffalo, where in the second extract (again) of 'RnR with Me' it seemed to me that the footage we were seeing was not the same as the audio behind it - go look again & you will see what I mean. Shockingly bad for such a major release.

4. The scanning of the 4:3 footage was likewise all over the place, and in some cases they had not even bothered to tidy up the left side distortions yet on others they were clean. Not very well done at all.

In summary this looked like it was knocked up by someone with no love for the source material whatsoever rather than a serious attempt at..what, exactly? What is the point of this film? Who is it for - it's certainly not for any serious fans at all - to my eyes & ears it is a collection of badly edited soundbites for an audience with the attention span of a goldfish with no clear direction, design or purpose for existing. I simply do not believe David would have approved of this in any way whatsoever, and given the hundreds of alleged hours of footage that were available - even if restricted to footage where multitracks exist - I refuse to believe that this was the best that could be done.
The SFX all over it are distracting to the point of seriously irritating. Why the explosions, the helicopters, the zapping from other films - the way bits from Nationwide '73 footage is cut into the music almost ad lib, the whole thing is a pointless confusing montage of wonderful source material that has been badly scanned, badly edited & badly produced in almost every way possible.
It would be a struggle to make a bigger mess of things.

All I can say is that I REALLY enjoyed it. I watched it with two female friends, one of whom doesn't know the first thing about Bowie. She said afterwards she gained a new appreciation of Bowie as a person and his music. So it can't be all THAT bad  :D
There is a lot to criticise if you expect your typical documentary, but the director said in a few interviews that aspect had been covered by the "5 Years" doc series and was not what he aimed for, and I would agree with that.
He also explained how they worked on the sound and it all sounded like it was a work of love to me.
Tl;dr - I understand it's not for everybody but I think it's a worthy addition to the Bowie canon.
I look forward to watching it again eventually.

Oh yeah - I watched it in a movie theatre and I think that certainly helps - the immersion of the soundscape and imagery you get in a cinema. And the volume  :D

We have 5 tracks that we know about, and I suspect the whole show was indeed recorded because why would RCA bother with just a few songs - it makes no sense.
My guess is that someone at the label decided that we already had Santa Monica '72 so did not need the Boston show.

I am very happy for you that you did enjoy this. Seriously, I really am.
For me, knowing how badly cinema sound is done these days I can only imagine how loud those SFX would have been, and strongly suspect I would still have walked out.
Mr Morgan said that he wanted to do it differently then he succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. This film is a mess - there is no direction, no cohesion and all the music is fragmentary & interspersed with those godawful noises - it's no documentary for certain & it is no celebration of David's music either.

U should look at his Twitter where he's describing the 'palette' of colours he chose and why.

I absolutely loved the film. I've seen it four times in the cinema. And especially the iMax version with atmos sound was excellent. A better balance between sound effect and audio. I have to agree that at certain screenings that balance wasn't right.

I think where this film went wrong for a lot of people is they expected something completely different. A more traditional documentary with lots of footage from the archive and providing some sort of straightforward chronological narrative about the artist career.

I think Brett did an amazing job of portraying Bowie's analysis of modern society, with the whole god is dead quote. The vacuum created by this loss of grand narratives and how we as society are trying to make sense of the chaos and the way Bowie himself as an artist relates himself to that; the fragmentation, the chaos, the searching for a threat and also finding a purpose in his own life since there were no grand narratives to rely on anymore.

Morgan chose to not only tell that story thru dialogue but also make chaos and fragments a theme in the audio and visual narrative of this film. And Hallo Spaceboy was the perfect song to start off and close with. It literally has the line "This chaos is killing me" in it, and of course "It's confusing these days..."

This film was never about perfect visuals, perfect audio, a straightforward narrative telling the artist's story or servicing die-hard fans with hidden gems from the vaults. It's a filmmaker's audiovisual interpretation of an aspect of what went into the construct (and development) of the artist David Bowie, his work and the interplay with modern society.

I also read some criticism from some fans that they could've done the same by cutting and pasting some YouTube videos together. Maybe, but to quote Damien Hirst: "You didn't".

Not trying to be a Brett Morgan fanboy. I don't know any of his other work. But I think if you approach this with an open mind you'll get a lot out of it. It's an intense experience.
