Hahaha, I was expecting a comment like that... :) I can completely understand though. But now you know what it is and can't be disappointed by what it isn't. I dare you to watch it again keep the opening quote in mind and just take it all in. I assure you you'll have a much better viewing experience.

Totally agree with neilwilkes, bofinken57 and Bowie78, as a fan I didn' t like it and my wife who knows Bowie very well but who's not a true fan said it was a flop, totally disorganized and sometimes quite annoying to her, which is a thing when we talk about Bowie ! She prefers to watch with me the different unofficial videos that I choose from the different eras... I will not buy anything of it, video or audio...

It was j u s t OK.
No one needs to be told their opinions are meaningless.
It's Brett Morgen's turn-the-colour-up-to-11 version of David Bowie - the myth.
It's like the endless tinkering of Star Wars.
NOW it's perfect...oh hang on.
I tried to listen to the soundtrack album.
Yeah, cut up technique in full force - not.
He knew fine well a lot of older fans would say WTF is this ?
But it does look pretty.
But hey, everyone's stopped saying Let's Dance is shyte for a while.
I only knew David Bowie the singer.
And I don't think I will be opening the Divine Symmetry box set anytime soon either.
On the plus side though, I do have all my Ryko CD's back.
Sadly, not the different gold mastered versions though.
There will always be new product.
I'm seriously thinking of getting off that roundabout for good.

Does anyone have the disco mastered Fame ripped from vinyl ?

I'd say it was excellent for the casual music fan that likes a bit of Bowie, especially when he was at his artistic peak in the 70s.

For the fan that has already seen all that sufff, I think its a tremendous botch job. Rubbish remixes that ruin the originals, and even worse visuals that ruin the originals. I think the sound and vision of this film will date very quickly (it already looks a bit naff) whilst the originals will always be great.

Well the blu ray dropped through my letter box this afternoon and I've just watched it.  

Not sure how I feel about it to be honest.  

For me it's all over the place from start to finish and the constant talking during the music, by the end was doing my head in.

If you take away the well watched TV interviews, a couple of BBC productions Cracked actor, Nationwide, and Weekend ITV production Earls Court, there's not a lot left from what I can tell is new footage.  Was the Buffalo footage from 1974 new, I'm not sure

It wouldn't have been so bad if the blu ray had extra's featuring some of the footage shown, like the Jean Genie footage from Hammersmith. But there's absolutely no extras which says it all really.

No doubt the Hammersmith gig will be re-released on 03-07-2023 for the 50th Anniversary, with this footage in, but probably not Around and Around.  Leaving that for another release to cream yet more money out of us fans.

A missed opportunity for sure imo and I will watch it again but first impressions are just that, and I'm so pleased I never went to the cinema to watch this, so disappointed.

I myself won't buy it, I' m fed up to spend all this money with material which shows only small bits of unreleased stuff and remixed of remixed of remixed hundred times versions of songs that are just fabulous without any remix at all ! I just didn't like, not to say more, the versions used in the film. Anybody's free to think this is a fabulous film with fabulous versions of songs, this is not my opinion, that's all... There are true fans, those who'll buy, see, listen or collect anything on Bowie, and others who just like the singer occasionally depending of the songs or albums. That is a fact too, there are true fans, and the true fans would love to see complete unreleased stuff of Hemmings film or a complete 1974 show, for example...  :D

Thanks for that, I wasn't sure.  

We've seen so much of bits and pieces here and there over the years you sort of forget whats new and whats not.  

Its 50 years in May next year since I saw Ziggy in Blackburn as a 16 year old.

I'm so disappointed with this release, it could have been so much more.

Totally agree I think I own every albums he's released many times over in virtually all formats plus at least 100+ vinyl bootlegs from back in the day.

Before I shuffle off this mortal coil it would be great to see something brand new and complete like the Hemmings film, a 1974 show, the complete Hammersith. the complete 76 rehearsals,  audio for the two Ziggy shows recorded in Boston and Carnegie Hall. But all we get is drip fed one track here on a compilation or a couple of tracks there on yet another boxed set.

Talk about rinsing every last penny out of every release from the fans.

Being a huge Bowie fan, I could not wait to see this…but honestly, it was not what I wanted. With all the access that the Director had to the Materials, I can’t believe we didn’t get more unseen live footage. Maybe one day.

This is the last time I'm going to defend this movie. But to be fair there is actually quite a lot of new shots in this movie. A lot of alternative angles of previously released stuff have been used. So not all has been seen before.

I get that people expected it to be more a movie with gems from the archive, I would've loved some rare 90's live stuff in it. Like that beautiful version of My Death he did during the Outside tour or maybe some rehearsed but never live played songs, but that's not what this Brett Morgan film is meant to be. We cannot fault Brett Morgan for releasing a Brett Morgan film about Bowie. It's his interpretation and his vocabulary that form this particular narrative.

Like I said before, if you think you can do it better, do it. Pitch a documentary idea to the estate. Come up with a good script and go for it. It's the same route Morgan took.

Tried pitching stuff to the Estate already, with a copy to Parlophone.
The idea was a Blu-ray edition for each album with the original master, the current remaster plus assorted extras, alternates, rarities and relevant live material.
Add to this 5.1 where it exists & do new mixes if it doesn't.
Then add a custom playlist feature that allows the end user to pick their own running order - and allows them to save it to their player for future access when disc is next reloaded. Then make these lists editable, resavable, and give 5 in total.
Neither the estate nor Parlophone even bothered to respond to the email & post-out (we sent a detailed EPK plus hard copy of a BD-R that showed off the custom playlist technology unique to our Blu-ray discs) or as much as acknowledge receipt of either.
Further reaching out to someone I cannot name, I was told in no uncertain terms that the person running things is one of those who will only ever green light his ideas, and never anything from an outsider.

This hurts more with the wasted opportunity on the 'Divine Symmetry' Blu-ray - there could have been so much more on that disc - it was under 12Gb - and we could have done it far, far better. What hurts even more is that this is our idea almost exactly but minus the custom playlists. The rest of it? Pretty much what we pitched.

It think this is very good comment.

I get that fans wanted more out the archives in this film - hell, it's the sort of plea I've cried out with many a time.

However in a biopic for the masses an 'let's get everything out the archives more than what the fans already have seen many times' was never going to be the prerogative.

Even I have seen that some things out the archives were in there in the first place for a reason.

In time more might emerge, but I get it that people are getting older and wanted to see more in their lifetime.

Thing is, like life in general, have to be grateful for what we already have.

after some time i motivated myself to listen to this again

the first time i put it on sometime ago i thought it to be horrid.

So this time i went for the soundtrack only.

First i really disliked it. the mixing of songs in songs. Could listen to it.  

Just the hammersmith with jeff beck and the buffaloo 74 songs where a nice addition.


So take 2.

This time i picked up a book sat down put on headphones and started reading.

And i got to say I LOVED IT!

Its like you know the songs, but there not as they seem. Its nice to listen to something that just doesnt add up 100% while reading.

I would never advice anyone to buy this record. I will probable never listen to it again.

ITS an utter waist of all the potential this record could have had.

YET i hope one day Buffaloo 74 will see the light of day. Cause it sounds GREAT!
