really?

at the time Bowie was a one-hit wonder, with a 3 albums that sold next to nothing, and scores of singles that went nowhere. He was the next step up from a nobody in the music business.

Given this, why would it be a good recording? Who would bother to finance that?

What was likely to be recorded is what was recorded.

For what it is, and given the circumstances, I think it's incredible, and a brilliant artefact of the times. It's clear, Bowie's in great voice, and it's a document of the turning point of his career. I'd much rather listen to this that a multi-track, pro recording, mixed and cleaned up recording the from Serious Moonlight, Glass Spider, Hours or Reality tours.

Well said.

While I will not listen to it a lot, that applies to a lot of live recordings anyway.

I still hope that one day more old recordings will turn up ... it irks me that that Bowie's set at Beckenham Festival was recorded and the tape was lost, that there were Arts Lab recordings that were available at the Beckenham Library that have not re-surfaced (and those would have been fine quality, recorded through the mixer they had, I read), and possibly the minor festivals Bowie did in 1970 may have been recorded by someone, somewhere.

I was hoping for the Glastonbury recording with the Hunky Dory Box....even if it was incomplete, with missing tracks, and fragments. What I have heard (the clip the BBC played) was lovely, dripping with atmosphere.

Hopefully the Ziggy box (when it comes) will have  Music Hall, Boston 1/10/72 and Carnegie Hall, both of which were recorded by RCA or (wishful thinking) the Rainbow Show which was (reportedly) filmed and recorded by Sukita. It's such a shame that there are so few documents from that tour, when he was (arguably) at his peak.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about Glastonbury 71! I think after his death he's continuing to make sure it can't be heard!

Certainly any 1972 recordings - particularly visual - are fascinating historic documents and brilliant musically too.

I guess we will have to see what we are allowed to hear ...

IIRC, isn't the problem with the Glastonbury recording twofold?
Problem 1 is that the owner of the recordings does not have mechanical rights (ie he/she cannot make money from them at all), and Problem 2 is that the Bowie set is apparently nowhere close to complete.
There is a very interesting thread about it on the 'Illustrated db' forums at

If Aylesbury was indeed recorded by someone, it was not planned to be released one day, so it was not professionally recorded. A miracle we're now able to listen to it! :-)

Bowie used to record everything. But sadly, he would often use the same tape and record the next nights' show over the previous' nights (as noted by Mick Ronson). I guess as he got richer this stopped, his vaults must be full of hundreds of shows in at least half-decent quality.

point 1 is a problem if the "owner" of the tape is being an a$$ - do they want to take it to their grave like king tuts treasures? (granted, I wouldn't give it to Warners to make bucks from, I'd bootleg it- I mean liberate it - instead)

point 2 is not a problem. Many Bowie live releases seem to be a frankenstein's monster. I'm only dancing is two shows mashed together (why not just release both shows?). Ditto Welcome To the Blackout. Ditto David Live; Ditto Stage. Oy Vey;  and the shows that are not mashups are incomplete. One day somebody will put out full shows, no messing about.

Only having fragments is better than nothing - only "hardcore" (terrible word) Bowie fans will be interested in the Glastonbury show, and yeah, people will moan, but I'd rather have something than nothing. It was an important show.
