Re-evaluation of Reality, re-evaluation of BTWN??

After a load of people raved about Reality a couple of years back, I played it back to back for a few days.  That's why it's fallen two places down my ranking!

Now the album you guys seriously need to listen to is Tin Machine II...

Don't blame me, I didn't do it!

It's ok mate, I'll pass on that experience thanks. I've heard all 42 tracks of their outtakes and then had to lie down in a darkened room for a couple of days. Therapy helps a lot, the tic is gradually going.. 8o  :-)

For me it's pretty hard to rank the albums as I grew up with them since 1972  and have emotional memories at the time when listening to them but from my heart (and ears) it would be something like this if I should rank them today:

The Man Who Sold The World (1970)
Hunky Dory (1971)
The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972)
Pin Ups (1973)
Aladdin Sane (1973)
Diamond Dogs (1974)
Low (1977)
Station To Station (1976)
'Hours...' (1999)
David Bowie (aka Space Oddity) (1969)
Lodger (1979)
Earthling (1997)
Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) (1980)
Young Americans (1975)
Heroes (1977)
Outside (1995)
The Buddha Of Suburbia (1993)
David Bowie (1967)
Let's Dance (1983)
Black Tie White Noise (1993)
Never Let Me Down (1987)
Heathen (2002)
Reality (2003)
The Next Day (2013)
Blackstar (2016)
Tonight (1984)
Tin Machine (1989)
Tin Machine II (1991)

my 50p

Well, at least you haven't admitted listening to "Tonight" which seems to be almost universally (so far anyway) ranked lower than the lowest thing you can imagine! :D

Um...   Since I'm going through all the albums in chronological order, today was the late 70's - early 80's day!  :D
I was listening to "Tonight" among others...  O:-D

Tomorrow I will listen to "Never Let Me Down"! Mwahahaha!  :-@

Can you people that have such a despised view of 'Tonight", 'Never Let Me Down', and say, 'Black Tie White Noise' explain a little about why you dislike those particular albums so much?

And, about my final list... I really am having a problem "committing" to ranking some albums  so far down below others. There are some albums that may be considered "weaker" but these also have some really great Bowie songs on them.

My thoughts exactly. That's why I haven't posted a list.

You are certainly right. My list reflects the actual likes/dislikes and this can change all the time.
But there are some fixed constants like Low and Heroes on the top and Tonight and Never Let Me Down at the bottom. Of course the "bad ones" can also have one or two good songs but this doesn't make overall impression of the album much better.

I am just going to put my top 15 (in order of preference and official releases only)

Man Who Sold The World
Space Oddity
Low
Lodger
Images (or any variant of the Decca stuff)
David Live
Station To Station
Rise & Fall Of Ziggy
The Next Day
Blackstar (this will probably wind up higher or lower on this list after I have had a year or two with it)
Heroes
Scary Monsters
Outside
Tin Machine Live Oy Vey Baby
Bowie At The Beeb

As far as bootlegs go my favorite is When Gravity Fails which reissues the awesome Ziggy 1 and Ziggy 2 releases and one of the great Australia 1978 bootlegs ('Kiss you in the rain' I think it is?) for a killer 3LP boot.

Why the dancing around about the concept that Bowie may have released some duff albums?  By acknowledging that some are brilliant classics, the direct implication is that some aren't (it would be crazy for anyone to rank every single one of David's album joint first, after all).

The two that consistently sink to the bottom, Tonight and Never Let Me Down, are also the two albums that David subsequently acknowledged as being driven by record company demands, rather than artistic expression, and in some of his 90s interviews (Earthling FM) he was quite open that the situation so distressed him that he was considering jacking it in - and his career was effectively saved by the creation of Tin Machine.

If we all rank them bottom and David does too, let's acknowledge the elephant in the room and accept that the man was fallible and made some mistakes - the corollary of which is that they just emphasise how good the good stuff is.  IMHO the issue with Tonight and Never Let Me Down is that they just show David trying to sound contemporary for the eighties - and show him following, rather than leading.  They're about the sound, not the songs, and Never Let Me Down in particular, has some shockingly bad songs.

That I'm no fan of Reality or BTWN is personal choice - my ears aren't keen on what they're hearing - but Tonight and Never Let Me Down are objectively poor albums.  They're why I switched from Bowie to Prince for six years in the eighties.

Any artist with such a long distinguished career is bound to have produced some lower quality material - I'm a big fan of Neil Young and there are some duffers in his catalogue along with the gems!

The problem for me with "Tonight" is it was rushed - pressure from EMI to capitalise on the surge of interest following "Let's Dance" and the Serious Moonlight tour.

Lacking sufficient decent new material, DB released some of the worst covers he has ever recorded - "God Only Knows" in particular is quite horrific.

"Tonight" would have made a cracking EP!

I think Reality is one of his better albums. That and Outside (particularly Outside) are underrated IMO - I consider Outside to be a masterpiece and was incredibly bummed to find out that he was talking with Eno about doing something else with it. I wo der if we'd have seen the continuation of the trilogy idea that he was discussing at the time.....

Personally I find "Hours..." to be a horrible let down. After Outside and Earthling hereally hyped that album beffore it came out and I just couldnt believe how bad it was.

Its very difficult for me to rank all of his albums, there too many that are so good, it'shard to commit them to spaces....His eras are so different that it's hard to compare an album like Outside with with an album like Ziggy. Hunky Dory and Ziggy I consider to be benchmarks of classic rock as well as exceptional Bowie albums. I think Outside is as good as Heroes, and Im sure a lot of people disagree...Then Let's Dance has some amazing pop songs, being a teenager in the 80s songs Like Modern Love bring back memories and are awesome, but I have a hard time positioning that against something like Low that has so much more artistic merit.

It is easy for me to pick the ones I feel are the best and the ones I feel are the worst.  I think the following are his best:

The Man Who Sold The World
Ziggy
Outside
Reality (particularly for Never Get Old, She'll Drive the Big Car, and Disco King)
Heroes
Low
Scary Monsters

Worst would be:

Never Let Me Down
Hours...
Tin Machine 1 and 2
Pin Ups

I keep telling you guys, it's the lost classic.  Skip the two Hunt tracks if that helps (it certainly helps me!).

I agree, I really like the live versions of "Loving the Alien", always have done and that's from "Tonight" but was never impressed with his Iggy covers, having seen Iggy a number of times in the '70's.

I also happen to agree with Steve and his elephant and Bowies '80's period comments. For me, it's about personal taste; what works for one, doesn't always work for another and peoples tastes can change depending on mood and time. Part of lifes rich tapestry thank goodness...

JE, any chance of an elephant emoticon please for future use...?!  :-)
