I have always been intrigued by the lyrics to Ashes To Ashes. On the face of it, they are very straightforwardly autobiographical - a synopsis of his career.

One of the lyrics : one flash of light, but no smoking pistol felt like a mystery. Doesn't really mean anything obvious.

Here is Bowie taking about the flash of light but no smoking pistol in an interview from 1979.

I suspect he had the lyrics written at that point, and liked the cadence of the phrase, and popped it into this interview. Still seems a little obtuse. But interesting nonetheless.
