I have the bonus discs of Earthling, Outside and Hours. Even from gleaning it seems that Re:Call 5 doesn't have nearly the same amount of tracks as the bonus discs on the original albums. Has anyone done a check to see how many tracks Re:Call 5 misses compared to the bonus discs? Furthermore, does this mean that Re:Call 1-4 weren't exhaustive either? Should I downloaded bonus discs of the earlier albums to find all remixes/edits that exist?

It depends on how much of a completist you are. The Earthling, Outside, Hours and BTWN bonus disc versions mainly contain remixes of songs that weren't included on recall. Some really good ones like the Adam F Telling Lies Mix and the Moby Dead Man Walking mix. I think the only weird omission on recall is Bowie's Thursday's Child's rock mix.

I'm waiting for the next set of re-issues myself.
Whenever they happen and they go back to one album but in expanded form.
Young Americans Deluxe Edition any one ?
Don't bother with the tons of fan-club replica bits of paper though.
His 'first album' to some.....

@professormouse, I suspect that you just hit the jolly old nail right on it's head. I certainly hope so anyway as the idea of Deluxe versions really floats my boat.
Young Americans is a great example too - the 2007 version on CD/DVD has, AFAIA, never been reissued in any form - those remixes are only available in that edition & nowhere else, and someone somewhere must have the complete takes of tracks like 'After Today' (take 1, not the widely available take 2), 'I Am Lazer' (unless that is what appeared as 'Laser' (an early version of Scream Like A Baby) on the 'Fresh From Divorce' bootleg of course), 'Shilling The Rubes', plus all the other alternate mixes, out-takes etc and this would make a fantastic Blu-ray audio title.

Then Hunky Dory - similar situation - hell, I could make  great argument for each & every title as a deluxe DVD/Blu-ray package....

Remixes form a big part of the Bowie's 90s catalog. Let me ask vice-versa: Re:call 5 has stuff not on the bonus discs?

Are you referring to the DVA  5.1 remix?

I think the only things on recall not on those bonus discs are Planet of Dreams, Pictures Of Lily, Fun (Bowienet mix) and A Foggy Day. And of course the new versions/mixes of the Little Wonder (Edit), Small Plot Of Land (Basquiat Long Version), We All Go Through (Different mix then the one originally released). I actually think the bonus disc versions of Outside, Hours, Black Tie and Earthling give you more value for the money. And Black Tie even has a bonus DVD.

But there are some mistakes on the bonus cds. I Am With Name is the album version instead of the version released on the Hearts Filthy Lesson single (They corrected this on ReCall). And The Nomad Soul versions aren't the Nomad Soul version, but alternative mixes (They didn't correct this on ReCall).

I believe Bowie's Nature Boy from  Moulin Rouge is an omission.

Released in 2001 - which makes it too late for this box (see if it's in the next one...)

They mention Nature Boy in the booklet. They couldn't include it because of licensing issues. But Nature Boy isn't on the Hours bonus disc either so that's not an omission. There are a couple of other tracks from this era not included on the bonus disc versions or recall. Truth with Goldie, Without You Im Nothing with Placebo. Moonage Daydream and Under Pressure live versions from the Spaceboy single and the Fun 'live version' that was released in horrible low quality Real Audio on the original Live And Well site way back in 1999.

and and and....I can wait 'til they go back to expanded versions of each album.
IF you want the albums on vinyl = it's heaven.
On CD it's wot you already have with a few juicy extra bits to wedge open your wallet.

Thank you for the detailed answers, everyone. I suppose my only choice is to keep both folders until the Bowie estate decides to release triple disc expanded edition of each album and even then I guess singles won't be covered...

A nightmare to be a completist with how labels release their artists' discographies...

Tell me about it!!
I wish I could upload images here, as my storage HDD's for Bowie would make a cat smile.

Good points, I've tired of these boxes a bit ... free choice as to which album I want in another form for the nth time rules.

Re Young Americans being his 'first album' to some, not sure who that would be, but it's not far off the view Terry Hall has expressed re Bowie.

All that stuff is out there if you know where to go though.
'Nature Boy' exists in a couple of versions (2001 OST for Moulin Rouge & a 2003 one with Massive Attack) both on the 'Jewel' release as well as the 'A Lot Of Toys' longbox.
'Without You I'm Nothing' has 5 mixes that I know of - single, live, and 3 others.
'Moonage Daydream' & 'Under Pressure' live versions are from 1995 and that is all I can find on them. I would not mind betting they are from the Birmingham NEC show we got as part of the BLA series. I'll test the theory later today in fact. They are also on CD 2 of the '1. Outside Version 2' release, yet they are not on CD2 of the expanded edition. Most peculiar, and the other tracks on CD 2/Version 2 are 'Hallo Spaceboy (PSB remix)', 'Strangers When We Meet (radio edit) & 'The Heart's Filthy Lesson (Bowie mix)' and not one of these is on the expanded 2CD version. Oddly enough, the PSB remix is not only T01 on CD2, it is also T19 on CD1 as well - possibly in error, as the listing says 4:10 where the track is actually 4:25.
'Truth' exists in several versions too - a live one from Phoenix 1997 that is strangely absent from the BLA release & a version with Goldie, again on that 4CD Longbox 'A Lot Of Toys'

A lot is missing from ReCall 5:
From 'Omikron: The Nomad Soul' (3 tracks are included) where my copies of the game soundtrack have many more (one version has 7 songs (I am not including the short musical cues included) the other over 10 if I am counting correctly - will conform this later)
Most of the alternate mixes & edits from '1. Outside', 'Hours' & 'Earthling' are simply not there - each of these had a 2CD version with a lot more material than the regular 2CD versions did. Let me try to explain how complex this all gets:
'1. Outside' - 'version 2' 2CD version has 6 extra tracks, but the alternate 2CD one has 14 totally different ones, with none of those on CD2/Version 2 included at all.
'Earthling' 2CD version has 13 tracks
'Hours' 2CD version has 17 tracks
'Black Tie White Noise' 2CD has 10 tracks - that is a total of 59 tracks (if my maths is right) on just those 4 albums where ReCall 5 has in total just 39 tracks

Not a single one of the Re:Call titles has been either complete or exhaustive

Luckily I got most of what I wanted back then when everything was released. But it would be convenient having everything in one package.

Truly.
This - for me - is exactly why I would do each album in the catalogue as a separate Blu-ray audio version as this would allow literally everything to go on a single disc whilst still keeping costs for replication down (the mandatory AACS is what I believe has stalled Blu-ray audio releases as it literally doubles the replication costs for a 'copy protection' system that simply does not work).

It's also why I am so into grabbing silvers of the (ahem) 'unofficial' releases, as although it is absolutely true that not only
A - does the quality vary wildly, or
B - tracks are incorrectly named / dated / attributed or
C - live shows vary enormously and some are not even from the date & venue claimed
these releases are still one of the very few ways to get hold of stuff the label simply refuse to release for whatever bloody reason they make up on the spur of the moment.
I mean really - it cannot be worries about poor quality given a mono cassette recording of the 1970 Paris Theatre show was shoved out as CD1 of 'Width Of A Circle', along with other 'not-that-low-gen' mono cassette dumps on CD2.

One of these days I'll try to 'expand' the re:call titles with all the missing stuff.
