For Linux/Ubuntu

youtube-dl for command line
youtube-dlg for the graphic interface

Don't be fooled by the name. It will download video from virtually any site that streams video.

To install - in a terminal

$ sudo apt-get install youtube-dlg

...and then my mind split open.

Thanks for all this information. Is there anything that converts M4A to Flac?

What OS?

Though I believe Audacity is cross-platform and that'll do it.

If you are on a Mac, Max will convert pretty much anything to anything:
http://sbooth.org/Max/

(Note that converting a lossy version of m4a to flac won't magically improve the sound from lossy to lossless, but it avoids any potential degradation of the sound quality as would happen if you converted m4a to mp3.)

(And yes, I realize that m4a can also be Apple Lossless, but, since this is about YouTube sourced material, it wouldn't be Apple Lossless).

Have you tried PortableApps?

http://portableapps.com/news/2016-02-28--utorrent-portable-3.4.5.41865-released

I'm not a lover of uTorrent 3.x.x,  but the PortableApps system is really useful.

VLC Media Player converts M4A to Flac easily enough.
Just open it up, go to 'Media > Convert/Save'
Add your files and then hit the down arrow at the bottom where it says 'Convert/save' and select FLAC under the audio options.
Job Jobbed.

(Not really sure I see the point though, as you just turned a lossy file into something pretending to be lossless!! Not really a great plan)

I can't count the number of people on other sites who think that just because a music file is flac that it is a lossless format. Too many folks are converting lossy files to flac and then offering them up in the lossless download sections and they are just polluting the stream.

Flac does not automatically equate full spectrum lossless sound.

Can anyone recommend some current good freeware / cheap software for ripping, playing and editing Blu-Ray?

In addition to my question about software suitable for editing Blu-Ray (as well software for ripping it and playing it), can anyone recommend any good subtle colourisation software. Yep, I know it's a controversial process but I have seen evidence that it's improved over time - there's a great colourisation of the Stones at TAMI in 1964 on youtube, or was, for instance.

I did not say that FLAC files are from lossless sources, and would agree with the general intent of what you say. What I did say was that FLAC is a lossless format.
The source files used to make the FLAC may well - and often are - from lossy sources, and I deplore this which is why I said what I did say - why turn m4a into FLAC?
