A member asked in the shoutbox what happened to Mind Warp Pavilion. If I remember correctly one the mods of that tracker (Chris I believe?) who lived on the Gulf Coast suffered a catastrophic loss of his collection during a hurricane. There were other issues that quickly followed that gave them no choice but to give it up and close the site.

Mind Warp Pavilion itself rose from the ashes of the first David Bowie dedicated tracker called Savage Jaw which only lasted 18 months. I remember when I discovered Savage Jaw it was like manna from the heavens! I rejoiced when MWP opened up and then I figured with the loss of that tracker that the good times were over. Thankfully along came Bowie Station!

Here is some info on Savage Jaw. It comes from the info files in nearly every copy of the Savage Jaw Archives shared on sites everywhere.

-----
Towards the end of the 1990's affordable home computers, CD copiers and internet connections forever changed the way that many music collectors traded their recordings. It became so much easier to contact other collectors from around the world without having to wait weeks for replies to letters, trades to be agreed and tapes to be copied, dispatched and delivered. Contacts could be made quickly and copies could be sent out quickly too. Unfortunately, the mail was still quite slow but it was all a big improvement in the opinion of many of us.

A group of traders would hang out at Ziggy In Concert forum and from there would get to know each other, arrange trades and generally have some fun whilst waiting for the mail to arrive.*

Move the clock forward to 2004 by which time many of us had "super quick" 512kbps home "broadband" and had become familiar with BitTorrent which enabled us to get recordings sometimes in hours rather than weeks. The focus for music collectors had moved once again. We were crying out for a Torrent site which specialised in the artist whose music had brought us all together, namely David Bowie.

Goodness only knows how much work went on behind the scenes but on April 1st 2004, Savage Jaw opened it's doors, inviting everyone in to join the swarm and enjoy David Bowie "At The Atlantis". Not everybody saw this development as a good thing but the vast majority welcomed the site and the recordings with open arms. Throughout it's relatively short lifespan, Savage Jaw operated strictly to the motto "Where Quality Counts". Everything available through the site was the very best available to us. Sadly, Savage Jaw as a Bowie Torrent site closed it's doors around August 2005 but left a legacy of which those involved can be justifiably proud.

Short info about MWP:

In May 2015 the former website Mindwarp Pavillion (MWP) went offline after mainly serving the Bowie community for 9 years. That sites admin, Chris Moffet (bewley), sadly passed away in the summer of 2014. A week before the demise of MWP, the moderators made the announcement that the site was probably going down. A few days after MWP went offline, Bowie Station was launched.

Thanks for filling in the missing info. I wasn't 100% positive about what happened to Chris and so I didn't even speculate just in case I was wrong.

If i'm right, here's where it began, i'm pretty sure Savage Jaw emerged from this site. (I was wrong see below.)

https://web.archive.org/web/19991001153515/http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Amphitheatre/7446/

I ran the Shadowman website and teamed up a bit with Chris in the late 90s.
David Priest (RIP) was providing me with occasional unreleased tracks, and Ruud from the IdbD and the wonderful Maarten would also send me the odd cassette to plug some gaps.

Those were wonderful days.

Edit - different Colin.

This is where Savage Jaw began :)

As for this site, we couldn't let MWP die without a response, could we?

So, Jan Erik took on the task, but needed help. I found the tracker software and sent a link to Jan Erik. MossGarden did the logo, which effectively locked in the colors and theme. As JE began to modify the software, I took on the task of changing the look of the site. Out of the box it looked, as JE perfectly described it, like a "Swedish Warez Site." Blue/Yellow/White and ugly as hell. Using MossGarden`s logo as a guide, I did the visible part while Jan Erik did the back end.

Though features have been added over the years (by JE) the two of us had the tracker up and running in roughly a week.

JE, we need to talk. I still have those last few pages to do, then I`d like to tackle the gallery.

Dennis

...and then my mind split open.

MWP was a superb place, never mind how it all looked - it was the content that mattered & you guys did a sterling job.

Ah the Ziggy in Concert site. I was quite active on that back in the day. I traded recordings with people from all around the world. Chris was very generous. I remember I really wanted a video copy of one the NIN bowie shows he had. But I hardly had anything to trade( he already had such an huge collection) . So he sent the video anyhow, because of my contributions to the discussions on his site. Very sweet of him.

Those were some great years. Not many people had internet, but it already was this magnificent medium connecting like minded people worldwide.

What I liked about ZiC was the emphasis on quality. If I remember right Chris would encode a boot in VBR mp3 and put it in parts on MP3freediskspace.com or something like that. It took ages to download just one boot. But totally worth it.

Someone should archive all that stuff before its actually gone.
I think the Tigers On Vaseline page was indeed "the beginning" even though tape trading predated it by umpteen years.

Look for the "Savage Jaw Archives". It's not everything but there is a lot. Each volume contains 6 to 8 shows and there are18 volumes. All can be found on this site:

https://www.bowiestation.com/torrents-search.php?search=%22Savage+Jaw+Archives%22&cat=0&incldead=0&freeleech=0&lang=0

And also at Guitars 101
