Can someone please let me know how many Mick Rock films exist, and in what quality?
All will become clear shortly but I have good reason to ask - especially as all PAL versions I have are incorrectly transferred and are at the wrong pitch & speed (obvious example is "Life On Mars", which is so slowed down it's not funny)

I have no idea how many films he's made in total, but he did produce and direct the Jean Genie, Space Oddity, John, I’m Only Dancing  and Life On Mars videos for the Sound + Vision DVD. There's also a Ziggy film (forgot the title) that he made that has no sound. Some versions have sound dubbed in (by someone else).

...and then my mind split open.

I guess that would be the Dunstable video used for the Ziggy Stardust promo video from the 1995 Santa Monica release. ;)

Would the audio / video exist in a 'secret' collection somewhere never to see the light of day apart from a few 'serious' collectors...?!  ;)

Nothing's unthinkable; funny how stuff keeps popping up.

Yes, you're right. I hope that one day people see the merit of sharing rather than hoarding. As my good lady occasionally reminds me, you can't take it with you. In this case, she's talking about £ though, not rarities such as Dunstable and whatever else is out there!  :D

I'm sure there are tons of things that just haven't surfaced yet. We're still digging out Velvet Underground stuff from as far back as 64/65!

What would be really good is the Mick Rock films at the correct pitch & speed - the versions on DVD are all too slow.

Hi Neil,

Nice to see you around again, always a pleasure.

You've mentioned these Mick Rock videos before, I'm not sure that I'm familiar with the ones you mean actually.
I assume from your line of work that you are looking for pre-DVD versions rather than trying to speed-correct the PAL ones.
It is strange the lack of care that has gone into some of these transfers, even stranger that they run SLOW, fast would be what you would expect from film to PAL. I haven't been able to find any information about how they were filmed, do you know anything about that?
You would assume that they started off at a higher frame rate than 25 fps for them to run slow. But what? 30p is the only one that I am aware of, but that sounds extremely unlikely. Or is it possible they were filmed on super-8 at 18 fps and maybe doubled up every other frame? That would give you 27 fps which would run slow on PAL, but then you might as well double every third frame which would bring you back to 24 fps, but would maybe be a bit more jerky.

I'm thinking aloud now ... I'll shut up  :)

Sometimes I think that you're too sweet to die,
Then other times I think you ought to be buried alive.

Hi Jimmy

I asked as I recently managed to find an archive D2 tape of 6 films (ex-EMI) in NTSC.
Sadly, though, all 4 are still running slow!! So not just the PAL versions.
So I need to go back to the paper & pencil to try & work this out!
(the 4 Mick Rock films are the usual suspects - "Moonage Daydream" & "Rock n Roll Suicide" are still unreleased and I have had no joy as yet tracking them down)
I even have a pristine HD transfer of LOM, but the speed on that is still slow.......

The other 2 on the tape are "Changes" (with the audio from the Ziggy Farewell gig) and "The Man Who Sold The World" from the late 90's by the look of it.
