I think Zion was actually recorded during the pin ups sessions, according to Mike Garson.

Bowie chronologist Kevin Cann states that Bowie recorded "Zion" at Trident Studios in January 1973 during the Aladdin Sane sessions.[1] One piece of evidence that the piece may have been recorded (or at least undergone overdubbing) during the July 1973 Pin Ups sessions at the Château d'Hérouville is an interview by journalist Martin Hayman at the end of the July sessions, which noted that Bowie played the "Zion" recording for Hayman as a work in progress.[2] Hayman has Bowie saying it was a demo for a piece to be used in the musical that he was planning at the time (which became his next album, Diamond Dogs).

A small part of the piano part was also performed live at one of the Japanese 1973 shows,I think it was in an intro to Starman.

You're right (and thank you marcio for the link). Hiroshima on the 14th and Tokyo on the 8th & the 20th.

Hyogo on the 16th is fractionally different to the 'standard' opening.

Seems that, when they played Starman in Japan, they opened with a slightly different 'twist'.

The actual 6 minute outtake itself is a weird mixture of Aladdin Sane, something that would fit neatly in Diamond Dogs (Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family?) as well as a nod to the '60's influence including a bit of Chas and Dave piano thumping! I can see why it didn't fit onto the album. Shame it can't be accurately dated as to whether this version, or the more well known Aladdin Sane, was first. Perhaps it was just a bit of a jam session as there are no lyrics with it, just DB lalala'ing along to it in places. If that is the case then it possibly spawned at least two other songs....

Could be but my version is called A Lad In Vein (aka Zion). Sounds around the 1973 period..

yes I believe was recorded during the Aladdin sane sessions, whether this is actually zion, I don't know. It eventually made it onto diamond dogs in a different form I think.

No evidence so far to support that thought:

https://bowiesongs.wordpress.com/2010/08/11/zion-or-tragic-moments-or-a-lad-in-vein/

and so 6 years later the debate still carries on. See comments.

But I'm always interested to see if anyone can provide further information / lyrics to this missing outtake.

"Zion" can be found on Missing Links One Ziggy:

http://www.bowiestation.com/TT2/torrents-details.php?id=273

Part of it reminds me of an Alice Cooper melody from Welcome to My Nightmare.

Chris O'Leary discusses the two prevailing ideas about the track in Rebel Rebel pp. 300 - 302, or see the material at the URL posted by MBF (above).
