I am having problems with ITunes.

ITunes keeps splitting albums or not wanting to add them to the right folder.
I have tried all the usual fixes that should not be necessary like marking the album into a compilation and repeating the artist name as the album artist and making sure it is disc 1 of 1.

It seems that the more files I have in ITunes the more frequent the problems appear and it is often with the stuff from here, that I have convert to AIFF since ITunes dosent support FLAC.

I have tried downloading Swinsian to see if that is a better program, I did read on Wired that people with large collections use that one. One thing that is keeping me from using that is that it looks like I can only add one image for each album, so I only got around to adding one album since the artwork is important to me.

Does anyone here have the same problems and if you did what did you do to fix it?
I use a mac so a solution has to work on one.

I'd like to help if I can. Can you give an example of what exactly is happening?

Thanks EarlMahagers

One example, a really annoying one, is today I uploaded the 1972 Royal Festival Hall show.

First I change the files from FLAC to AIFF in XLD so that they will play in ITunes.

Then I imported the files into ITunes

When looking at the files in Recently Added each song is by itself
I choose all of them, renaming the album
Renaming the artist, using the same name in album artist
Setting disc number to 1 of 1
Checking album is a compilation of songs by various artists (this helped bringing albums together before)

After this it looks fine in Recently Added

But if I browse under artist, each of the 17 songs are filed as a by a separate artist (they off course have the exact same artist name) thereby only having one song in each folder.

If I browse by albums it is one album, but with 4421 albums that is not a fun way to find what I'm looking for
:?

try dropping all the tracks that need to be one 'album' in a new playlist. Then select get info all and rename each tag for artist, year, etc for the whole set of songs. keep the album artist tag empty and do not select all tracks as a compilation.
once you've done that, select all the tracks and name the 'sort as' for example  1972<Royal Festival Hall show>.

If you get stuck, I'll try and upload some screen shots. If this helps, try the suggestion I posted on Steve Hoffman forum for organising iTunes albums:
http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/itunes-organising-artist-albums-chronologically.284474/

On a Mac here, too. Not really sure what the problem is. What I can do is explain how I use iTunes and see if that helps you.

It really doesn't matter what you use to convert files from FLAC but just so you know I use Audacity.

Any issues I've had that seem to correspond with what you describe comes down to labeling. To keep things simple, I create and edit everything in "playlists" rather than editing anything under "my music."

For each "album" I create a separate playlist. The header is named with the artist and the album (Artist Name - Album Name)
Drag all files for that album into that playlist. Highlight all files (command a). Press control and click anywhere in the highlighted section and press get info. This is where I edit all information for the album/playlist.

There are different tabs but I do everything under "details." Again, I tend to keep things simple, using only the artist and the album options. But, more to the point, labeling under details keeps everything the same for items in that playlist and should keep everything in the same folder.

I always stay away from labeling things as "CD1 or CD2" and instead either create separate playlists or use one playlist for the entire album.

I hope this helps. Without more info I could only describe what I do and it may not address your problem. If not, please describe what is happening in more detail and I'll try to be more helpful.

Best, nknotz

Oh man I thought I was the only one with this problem! Seems to have occurred after a past iTunes software update. I just stick to my recently added as that's the only place its correct.

Hey Moss Garden,

When you are converting flacs with XLD don't covert to AIFF all you are doing is expanding the file. I use macs, basically a flac needs to be converted to APPLE LOSSLESS, you'll find in your preferences you can convert to say bit depth and frequency. When you look at the file after you'll find the file size is more or less the same give or take two mb.

converting flac to Aiff is the equivalent to recording from mini disc to cd, simply expanding a file for no good reason, plus you are using more hard drive space for no benefit

hi dhsugarblade

I choose AIFF back when I was still burning CDs, also thinking that if CDs has that format it must be one where I don't loose anything. I ripped all my CDs as AIFF.

Now I changed the 1972 Royal Festival Hall show to Apple Lossless, in ITunes, it merged into one album :-), but still wont join the others albums under the same artist, it is sitting there with BOWSTAT010 that also refuses to be where it should. This is where I usually could get it to join the rest by choosing album is a compilation

It also went from 722 to 381 MB, that is very nice.

Hi EarlMahagers

I just started looking at the Hoffman site, first of I really like that you have a way to get the albums that are released the same year in the correct order, finely Low will be before "Heroes"

With all the concerts I have done it by giving them titles with the date first like this:
04/17/76 - Hallenstadion - Zurich - Switzerland (BOWSTAT005-16RM) (C)
The last letter in brackets is the grading system I use for the sound so know what is worth playing and what is just there coz I'm an crazy Bowie head collecting.

I tried changing the sorting for 07/08/72 Royal Festival Hall
set it as: 1972<07/08/72 Royal Festival Hall>
It changed place with the other show that dosent want to join under the right artist name too, but that didnt help.

Since the problem is that it dosent file right under the artist name, I am thinking that maybe it could be forced into the right place by using the sort as under artist name.
I tried a cpl of things without luck. the main thing is that I'm not sure how the sentence should start.

To have Diamond Dogs before David Live its 1974a<Diamond Dogs>
what would be in the place of 1974a ? for controlling the artist name

The artist name is: Bowie live 2- Ziggy Stardust   (yep I have one for each tour)

Not knowing what I was doing I tried these two versions without luck
<Bowie live 2- Ziggy Stardust>
Bowie live 2- Ziggy Stardust<Bowie live 2- Ziggy Stardust>

Sorry for the confusing

The 1974a<Diamond Dogs> trick didnt solve my problem, but it was a great way to change position of albums that are under the same artist, and year.

My problem is still that there are albums that have the same artist name, that wont stay together, in other words, in the column of artist the exact same artist name will be multiple times in the list. The albums should gather under just one but some create its own thereby repeating the name in the list.

I thought that maybe the sort as trick used for changing the order of albums also could force merge the the albums under one name

Is it still confusing?

Try to rename the stray items with incorrect artist name.Eg name those under artist Bavid Dowie, to force them into another file. Then go back and rename them correctly to see if they then sit in proper situation.
That make sense?

have you tried renaming all three 'Bowie live 2-Ziggy Stardust', so the 49 albums are grouped together as say 'blah blah blah' and then changing back to proper name?

failing that, can't you go to actual file location and force them into position rather than using iTunes? That may work?

they ended up in two folders, still better than 3, I will give them there old name back, and see if a second change does anything, if not I will move them manually as you suggest and see if they stay

I just looked before giving them the names back, in hard disk they are now in one folder, even thou they showed up as two in the program. I'm turning ITunes off and reopening it before naming them back
