It's a long time since I did any of this but, from memory, the steps I've taken with either Audacity or Audition is roughly:
  • Copy the wav onto the PC.
  • Make a copy of the wav and open it in the audio editor.
  • Find the start of the set and delete everything before.
  • Find the end of the set and delete everything after.
  • Apply a normalize filter.
  • Save the wav file.

    If the recording is too quiet, bring the level up manually (do not peak limit either - nothing worse than a recording where some goon has taken all the headroom out with bloody limiters and this happens commercially too) but please, please do not normalize.

    Doesn't it depend on the waveform? "Never normalise" seems a bit extreme. "Never say never", as they say :P

    For stealth I recommend the Roland R-07 which is the size of a deck of cards...internal mics are just ok but hooked up to church audio mics and pre amp the results are great
