Has anyone been? I'm guessing it is of limited interest to most of you because it has nothing to do with his music. I was planning to go tomorrow but I've just discovered it is only open on weekdays which obviously means taking a day off work.  I love Sotheby's though. I've seen so many amazing artworks there for free in the middle of the west end and most people don't seem to realise it is even there or that it is open to the public even if you don't have millions to spend!

I am very curious about his art collection, I know bits and pieces, I hope it will all be online for the rest of us to see.

I'm going to see the Bowie exhibition in Bologna next week, looking very much forward to that, I have not seen any of them.

Well I hope you enjoy it. Let me know what you think. Normally everything Sotheby's has got is online because they want to encourage you to bid on things. It's also great because you can download pdf's of each item for free which include the history of the artwork as well as a nice picture of it.They are also selling catalogues but I'm not sure how much they will cost.

I'm back after my little Italian holiday. It was great to see the Bowie Is exhibition at Mambo in Bologna.
I had not given thought to it being arranged by The V&A, so it was almost all about image and not high on content, but great to see all the costumes, and a bit emotional to see the ones I had seen him wear on stage.  I was not a fan of the way they were using the audio guide when having sounds in the same rooms, all blending together into annoying noise. The next to last room where the had projections of a cpl of songs on top of high walls with Elvis Jail House Rock style placements of costumes was my favourite having Rock 'n' Roll Suicide blasting wonderfully loud. I also enjoyed reading some of his handwritten lyrics, especially when changes was present, giving an insight into his song writing.
There was plenty of Iselect Lp's and Ragazzo solo singles, the two together will set you back 60€ should be half of that in my opinion. The English version of the catalogue was 50€, the Italian for some reason was 38€, I decided that Amazon, Abebooks or Ebay could do that better at some point.
I was not sure what time I wanted to go so I had ordered the open ticket, there was not a lot of people, I could easily have bought the cheaper one at the door.
I hope this and other part of Bowie's collection ends up as a museum somewhere in the UK when they are done with the tour.

I went to the Bowie Collector exhibition at Sotheby's on 9 August.

It wasn't in the Bond Street Sotheby's it was around the back in George Street.

There really wasn't a lot to see but you could take as many photographs as you liked. Everytime I turned around I seemed to be standing in the way of some bloke who'd set up a tripod with his Leica on it.

Unlike a lot of exhibitions you didn't have to squeeze between loads of other viewers to see anything as there were only a few people in attendance.

A radiogram (estimate £800 - 1,200) was in the reception area and above that was a list of the records DB thought would change your life.

Off the reception area were two rooms of pieces from his collection. The bigger of the two rooms had three big black and white Bowie photographs by Gavin Evans from 1995.

I quite liked the Martine Bedin SUPERLAMP (est. £800 - 1,200) but you can still get them on eBay or at the Early Learning Centre and of course, Marcel Duchamp's À BRUIT SECRET (est. £180,000 - 250,000), which is essentially a ball of twine between two brass plates. Brilliant!

The most expensive piece on display was a Basquiat (est. £2,500,000 - 3,500,000).

If you filled in a form giving Sotheby's your details you could take four postcards with different images. (There were only three different images so I took two of DB and one each of the others which were copies of two of the artworks on display).

Sotheby's will be having a proper exhibition with 200-300 items on show from 1 November to 10 November prior to the sales on 10th and 11th November.

A three part catalogue is available to order from Sotheby's and will be shipped sometime in October. It costs £110.00.

I shall certainly be going to the November exhibition and to the sales if I can get a ticket.

That sounds like it was interesting
Was the list of records the same as this one he did in 2003 for Vanity Fair?

Hi earlgrey
That sounds pretty much like I was expecting which is why I was slightly dubious about taking time off work to see it. I'm definitely going to go to the full version in November because there is no doubt Bowie amassed a very interesting art collection and like everything you can see at Sotheby's many of the artworks may never be displayed publicly again, or if they are it might be in a gallery in some country you're never likely to visit.

Hi Mossgarden
It's sad that there are still problems with the audio guide. At the V&A it was probably the only real downside to the experience. As music is such an important part of Bowie's legacy it is quite surprising that they haven't sorted it out. Several times I would be standing near to a wall of the gallery and I would be hearing the music or dialogue associated with the exhibit i was in front of but overlaid with the sounds from whatever was on the other side of the wall which was a bit annoying. I think overall though the exhibition was fantastic. I don't know how exactly you encapsulate Bowie in a few rooms because he means so much to so many people for so many different reasons. Things that stuck out for me were the storyboards for "Hunger City" and seeing the costumes for things like "Ashes" - I couldn't believe how small they were!
