This year is a little different from the previous ones
There are still no rumors or news about any boxset from the 00's or the 70's
Does anyone know anything or have any guesses?

Maybe because everything is going to subscription streaming, they've decided the profits aren't enough from a box? :(

I admit there is some 'fluff' in each box musically, but I would rather have the opportunity to hear the archive music than not, and the books are lovely.

Your point is valid, although I don't believe these box sets will end.

Bands like Metallica, who are releasing a 25 disc deluxe box set of an album that isn't even one of their best, are still betting on releases like this.

Judging by the delay in the announcement, there won't be anything by mid-year.

Perhaps the Bowie estate is gun-shy about box sets after the Brilliant Live Adventures fiasco.

The fact that we're asking this is so disappointing. Look at the Zappa estate- quarterly releases of something, even if it's not the most interesting bit for everyone, there's still a release. We want to give them money and yet, we can't.

I have heard that they are rethinking boxsets due to low sales and wanting to profit only from songs in TV ads and soundtracks.
I personally find this an insult.
Fans who are over 50 years old have spent a lot of their lives waiting to hear those songs that we read about in books like Complete D.Bowie
And I hope the next comment is not a joke from someone who has nothing to say.
It is increasingly difficult to find information on the forums.

I can understand the points made on the above post. However, I have a feeling the best of the archive has been mined - in my opinion, that is.

The early years demos (ie up to 1969) are interesting but can be frustrating as clearly they were offcuts when David was finding his feet. We do now have a lot of archive material from 1970-72, some of it is wonderful, and again some interesting in 'telling the story' of his development. For example, I find Bowpromo is a poor substitute for the Hunky Dory final mix - they really did make it better.

There was an abundance of recordings from 1969-1972 for a reason, a big creative rush and scrabbling in more directions than ever to establish himself. Once Defries took control, it seems that less recordings were made of songs that were likely dismissed, and we have not seen much evidence of material kept from the Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs sessions (aside from the multiple takes of When you Rock and Roll with Me, and a small clutch of good outtakes). Young Americans - a lot of studio prep is now out there, some love it - I have found that much of what I have heard pales in comparison to the released work.

For the 1973-1975 period that leaves live work. We have not seen much evidence of further concerts from 1973 being well recorded other than Hammersmith. The 1984 floor Show is likely tied up in ABC's fees forever, and they have put it on youtube in great quality anyway. The 1974 tour(s) - a lot has been released officially now. I would still welcome more, but that's unlikely to happen. The official line is likely they have now released the best of the professional recordings from 3 different stages of the tour, how much more can all but hardened collectors buy.

Personally, I would love a box dedicated to pristine different mixes of the Hammersmith 1973 concert. Most of that is out there already though, again.

I expect they have considered a further box, but based on the above I expect Bowie's people and the record company have struggled to find something they can easily pitch to the market. There may be very wealthy collectors who could prove me wrong on a lot of my assertions above about what exists, possibly, but they will not always like to make public what they have, which I can understand. I think the same problems apply to 1976 onwards - what has been kept has been mined already to the point that little is left that is marketable.

Ah, did recall something that should come out - google no longer finds this, so I can see why people like Yandex now - over to Tony Kaye, re the 1976 tour. "The keyboardist said it was “a shame that not a lot of it was recorded or filmed.” “I do have tapes that I tried to get to David just before he died,” he explained. “I found in a box a board mix of two shows. One at Madison Square Garden and one in Paris that are just fantastic performances. … I tried to get a message to David that I had them right before he died … they just sound so great. For board mixes, they are unbelievabe".

The year 73 is not just about the recordings of Aladdin Sane
There are songs recorded with Astronettes with Bowie's vocals, outtakes from Pin Ups, 1984 stageshow demos and much more
1974 has Dogs sessions, Sigma sessions and other things tried in the studio

That is true, but a lot took a very long time to surface as very well off or very well connected collectors had it for a long time first.

So unless someone knew a roadie or sound person prepared to risk legal or job repercussions for letting out Bowie material, buying it was another way to get it.

I would buy a box containing such things if it had a decent book with it. However the lack of releases suggest you and I are in the minority - I really doubt much of the above is attractive enough to listen to make it marketable. More then ever retail interests are conscious of market reaction to a product (or service), and how it can affect their position to continue making money. I had my bank email earlier to ask me to rate my "cashpoint experience"! May seem an odd example, but if banks can worry about that public reaction to that, Parlophone will certainly be worrying about less than hardened fans moaning about what they consider to be substandard material on expensive box sets.

I think if they did a 'rest of the 70s' box, they might be on a winner. Time will tell, I guess.

Tell me why they paid Ken Scott to remix the rare material from the Aladdin and Pinups period, according to him, and there was even talk of a boxset called Glam, if they were only interested in the material up to Ziggy?
Just to leave it where it is?
They complain that the boxsets are not selling as much but they still invest time and money?

We could argue about this day in and day out, and I don't wish to - however I suspect the beancounters and those who pull the strings said, ok good work, but I'm not hearing something that a lot of public will buy en masse.

It would be nice to be proved wrong, but they've already missed anniversary deadlines and I suspect the will is not there :(.

Outtakes of Lady Grinning Soul would be interesting if they exist ... but until anything like that happens...
