Is Tony Defries still entitled to half of everything created in the '70's?

Through Bowie Bonds,
Pullman and Bowie were able to raise $55 million;
a good chunk of which Bowie used to buy back the rest of his masters from his old business manager.

OOOOOOH! Lady Grinning Soul what a track probably his best tune.

I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.

STAY TUNED FOR PRE-ORDER LINKS TO DAVID BOWIE 6. I CAN’T GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY (2002 – 2016)

09 JULY, 2025 London-Parlophone Records proudly announce DAVID BOWIE  6. I CAN’T GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY (2002 – 2016), the sixth in a series of box sets spanning Bowie’s career from 1969.
The new set is the latest instalment in the award-winning and critically acclaimed series that includes DAVID BOWIE 1. FIVE YEARS (1969 – 1973), DAVID BOWIE 2. WHO CAN I BE NOW? (1974 – 1976), DAVID BOWIE 3. A NEW CAREER IN A NEW TOWN (1977 – 1982), DAVID BOWIE 4. LOVING THE ALIEN (1983-1988) and DAVID BOWIE 5. BRILLIANT ADVENTURE (1992-2001) and will be released on 12th September.

DAVID BOWIE  6. I CAN’T GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY (2002 – 2016) is a twelve-CD, eighteen-piece vinyl and standard digital download/streaming box set named after the closing track on ★ (BLACKSTAR), Bowie’s final studio album. The box sets include newly remastered versions (except ★ and No Plan), with input from David’s co-producer Tony Visconti.

2002’s HEATHEN was the first album Bowie and Visconti had worked on together in twenty-two years. Recorded in a residential studio in upstate New York, it reminded Visconti of his time with David in Berlin in the 1970s, “There was no control room. The console was at one end of the studio and the band was placed at the other end. The acoustics were quite live and from my experience of making “Heroes” at Hansa Studios in Berlin, in the huge Grand Hall (known as Meistersaal recording hall), I wanted to make these acoustics work for us.”
For the follow-up REALITY, released in 2003, Visconti recalls, “David said he wanted to write for his new touring band, who would also record the album”, giving the record a more “Thrusty” sound as Bowie put it at the time. That band then took to the road for A REALITY TOUR, one of the best-loved tours of David’s career, it is represented here for the first time in its re-sequenced order to better reflect the set lists of the Dublin shows. The vinyl version of the album is pressed in transparent blue, echoing its initial release.

After a decade away from the studio, the sessions for THE NEXT DAY happened in secret; Visconti says of that time, “We vowed not to tell a soul that David and we were making a new album – and that even included our domestic partners. His two-fold purpose was to write and create without pressure from the outside, plus he wanted its release to be a complete surprise. It all worked out great, except when he was spotted a few times walking to and from The Magic Shop studio in Noho, Manhattan, raising quizzical eyebrows. I was stopped once by a fan who recognised me and asked, “Is David Bowie making a new album?” I said, “Absolutely not!” Later, when we had rough mixes of our efforts, I was walking around Manhattan with a big smile on my face. No one could possibly know that I was listening to new Bowie songs on my earbuds.” Those sessions produced so many songs that those additional tracks along with two remixes were included on THE NEXT DAY EXTRA.

★ (BLACKSTAR), David’s final studio album, was released on 8th January, 2016. Bowie and Visconti went to Donny McCaslin’s jazz quartet playing live in New York after working with him on the track ‘Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)’. Tony Visconti: “Donny’s quartet was no ordinary jazz band, they were super musicians at the same level as classical musicians in top symphony orchestras. David told me that this band, with Mark Guiliana – drums, Tim Lefebvre – bass, and Jason Lindner – keyboards, will be the band for the recording of ★.”  Every one of the tracks for ★ (BLACKSTAR) were each recorded in one day; Visconti recalls, “The first song for the album began with “’Tis a Pity She Was a Whore,” on 7th January. With a couple of rehearsals with David singing in the isolation booth, we were ready to go. Take one was perfect. We told Donny the take was fabulous. He thanked us and asked, “What’s the next song?” I forgot that jazz musicians are one-take experts. This was not a normal thing for people who make Rock and Pop music. It usually takes many hours to get that great take. Just to play it safe we asked for another take and Donny complied.”

On Bowie’s birthday in 2017, the NO PLAN EP brought together the original songs written for Bowie's Off-Broadway play, LAZARUS, including the titular ‘Lazarus’, ‘No Plan’, ‘Killing A Little Time’, and ‘When I Met You’, all recorded during the sessions for ★ (BLACKSTAR).

Exclusive to each of the box sets are MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL and RE:CALL 6. The former was recorded on the 18th of July 2002 at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival and among the 31 tracks features a full performance bar one song of one of Bowie’s most revered albums, LOW. RE:CALL 6 features 41 non-album / alternative versions / b-sides and soundtrack songs, including tracks never previously available on CD or vinyl over 3CDs and 4LPs.

The physical box sets accompanying book, 128 pages in the CD box and 84 in the vinyl set, feature previously unseen notes, drawings and handwritten lyrics from Bowie and photos by Sukita (who took the set’s cover shot), Jimmy King, Frank W. Ockenfels 3, Markus Klinko, Mark ‘Blammo’ Adams and more as well as memorabilia, technical notes about the albums from co-producer Tony Visconti and design notes from Jonathan Barnbrook.

The CD box set will include faithfully reproduced mini-vinyl versions of the original albums where applicable, and the CDs will be gold-coloured rather than the usual silver. The vinyl box set has the same content as the CD set and is pressed on audiophile quality 180g vinyl.

You're right and anyone who knows even a little bit about Bowie's career knows that, apart Lets Dance,he never sold a damn thing and it wouldn't be now that he would

what? TRAFOZSATSFM alone has sold 8-10 million (depending on who you believe).

Even NLMD sold almost 3 million

He's sold over 100 million records, one of the best selling artists of all time.

The  man sold a lot of records.

what do people think of this release?

These career boxes were not for me (I have everything, or have heard everything, I don't need it collected in a box that will never be opened).

I've much preferred the album boxes Divine Symmetry, Rock N Roll Star etc. for the unreleased and unheard stuff on them, some of which has truly seem to come out of nowhere.

While I agree with you on the box sets, I just want to say I'm now so old that I don't want to play vinyl but the CD boxes have such small print that I'd have to buy the vinyl box for the blurb.

but when done right, I love the blurb.

I guess we all start out having to buy stuff because we need to hear the music.  For some the collecting bug takes hold and there is a need to have the complete set of recordings in as many formats as possible and for others there is the appeal of a shiny new box with all the blurb and extras that comes with it. I get that but my problem is that it's still all about the music for me and there is nothing new in this box set that I haven't already heard and have in my collection - so I won't be buying it. The inclusion of even a few Blackstar outtakes (if they exist) would have made it tempting but the Montreux gig that most of us already have through the torrents on this great site (and which probably won't be in any better sound quality on this release) just isn't enough to warrant a purchase.

I put together my own imagined version of this box set following the release of the Brilliant Adventure box and even called it “I Can’t Give Everything Away”.  The only difference between my version and this scheduled release is that I opted for the Riverside gig instead of Montreux because I felt that the inclusion of the whole ‘Low’ album (great as it is) skewed things away from an overview of 2002-2016.  If a mere fan like me can second guess a future release that easily you have to ask what added value the record company are bringing other than the production of glossy peripherals.  BTW - I also put a Tin Machine box together at the same time and it will be interesting to see how that stacks up against an official release if and when it comes.

I have been posting a series of articles called "Images" in the Bowie General section of the forum. If you go back and read them from the beginning you will discover that David's career was nothing but smoke and mirrors in those early days... all through the '70's. He had star power in England but basically nowhere else. Those Ziggy tours in '72 and '73 for the most part lost money to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Album sales were quite dismal in the US and while good, not spectacular in England. The ziggy album topped out at #5 in the UK in 1972 but it took an entire year to crack the US top 100 (at #75).

Manager Tony Defries made it LOOK like Bowie was the biggest star on the planet but in the early '70's David was perpetually in debt and playing to venues that weren't even half full.

Comparing Ziggy to a 1987 release is apples to oranges. Bowies commercial success did not occur until 1982's Let's Dance and while he was hitting somewhat of a low period by the time Never Let Me Down was released his awareness had certainly grown tremendously when compared to the early 1970's.

Yes, Bowie has sold a LOT of albums... over time. But when you step back and examine things in real time there were moments when his career in music was seriously in doubt.

what do people think of this release? These career boxes were not for me (I have everything, or have heard everything, I don't need it collected in a box that will never be opened).I've much preferred the album boxes Divine Symmetry, Rock N Roll Star etc. for the unreleased and unheard stuff on them, some of which has truly seem to come out of nowhere.

I've got them all and just pre-ordered this new one. That's on top of having them all individually already.

I guess everything hinges on whether you measure an artist’s success on purely sales or on their wider artistic endeavour and influence.  For me the thing that set Bowie apart was his dogged determination to do whatever he wanted to do artistically almost irrespective of commercial success – hence seismic gear shifts like the Berlin trilogy, the Tin Machine era and the short-lived industrial Outside/Earthling period.  Great music doesn’t always sell well on release but often gains a sustained interest and support over the years and Bowie (like the Velvet Underground) is a prime example an artist who's music achieved that.

I think he was being sarcastic after our post 'exchange' that started in my mooting there may not more box sets at this point, or at least not a continuation of the 1970s album round-up sets that they started, for a while.

Depending on how you see it, we've been both proved wrong by this latest announcement. Sort of.

I liked the announcement but was disappointed by the lack of rare studio material, which would have helped sales and pleased fans like me.

On the other hand, it's good to have several songs that were previously out of streaming back in the libraries.

With Bowie's penchant for laying down a vocal in just one or two takes there just isn't as much rare studio material as with other artists.

This is a controversial subject.
I know a collector who listened to a tape with an hour of different takes of Hang Onto Yourself.
I'm talking about those songs that appeared in Nicholas Pegg's book.

Jeff Rougvie said there's another 'better take' of God Only Knows
on a shelf in a tin somewhere
ie - he'd heard it

he only did one take
is like the berlin trilogy
it's made up
but it sounds good

there's tons more they will carry on drip feeding
that will magically turn up for the next
box set
