"In 1989 when working with Tin Machine, he mused "There's stuff on [the album] that I could really kick myself about. When I listen to those demos it's, 'How did it turn out like that?' You should hear "Loving the Alien" on demo. It's wonderful on demo. I promise you! (laughs). But on the album, it's ... not as wonderful."

Did this demo ever surface in any shape or form? That sounds crazily intriguing.

I wonder as Bowie mentioned in the introduction of this live version if the demo for this track sounds similar?

Hm, maybe but I don't think so, Gerry talks about how they came up with that beautiful version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srSOLME9pGg but it might very well be what that demo is like, I really hope it'll pop up someday.

Incidentally,
in an oft-repeated quote,
years later David would claim that he was asleep at the wheel and that,
for example,
the original demo to ‘Loving the Alien’ was so much better than how it turned out on the album.
I put that to Carlos Alomar.
Did he remember this demo ?
“Of course I do – it sucked! [laughs].
Totally disagree.
The arrangement I put together for ‘Loving The Alien’ was fabulous!”

Loving the Alien is the best thing about Tonight, I don't see anything wrong with this song, I think 2004's version is too monotonous and I don't like it

As far as I know it has not surfaced.
Various versions have, of course - including the single edit, a remix of the single edit, several 12" versions and scads of live ones.
As Carlos Alomar says, it's a great track & as ayres says above it's the best track on Tonight with possibly the exception of 'Blue Jean' which is also superb - as is the 20 minute Julien Temple promo for it (which is one of the many hidden tracks on the 'Best Of' DVD set)

Carlos Alomar says it was rubbish.

"My job is to lie to you."

And that what you remember about it is wot-he-wrote.
