Apparently this was owned by Mitch Alfus, a.k.a the Leather King for at least 10 years.
So it must be a neighbour. After a little more digging I found a place that said there are 8 penthouses in the building. Somewhere it also said that Bowie had hired the architect to do the building on top of the building. Sorry to disappoint that its not his :( got the building right thou :D  

I used to pass this place once in a while when I was living in NYC.
From the street it looks like a house build on top of this old building.
For a very long time it was under renovation.
I liked passing it in the street thinking David was up there doing something, painting, reading or hanging out with his family, maybe even secretly composing some new music. This was before he released The Next Day.

From the street it looks like there is more than one floor, I thought they had all of it, I guess not.

Of the artwork in the flat I recognise a couple of pieces by Alex Katz, Tom Wesselman and a print By Roy Lichtenstein

Anyway if you have $10,600,000 in your pocket it can be yours or for just $22,500 a month you can get it Unfurnished.

That is a very interesting post. I can remember that you sent me a PM 2 or 3 years ago with a photo of the house you took at that time. But now this got a completely different approach. On one hand it's nice to have look at the inside of the flat but then it's very sad that nothing seems to be left of the man. Anyway it would be great to have some 10 million bucks in the hind quarters...

Yeah learm, I recall sending you the photo.
And I totally agree. Also about the 10 mill  :D
I kind of liked just passing the house, I never went into the lobby or anything.
I know that a lot of the building, not the penthouses, are artist studios.
They also had a house up state in the country side, I think he had a painting studio there.
Looking inside the flat even thou this is not his flat is a bit weird, it looks very common rich NYC not very personal.
I guess that Iman still have 7DE (thanks earlgrey)
Next time I'll pass sometime in the future will feel quiet different.

So to be clear, the furniture and art and possibly some fixtures in these photos is part of the realtor's staging - none of this is Bowie's own furniture and art etc. But it is still an amazing apartment.

Yes, its a neighbours to Bowie flat, when I posted this I thought it was Bowie's because that was what the web page said that I found it on. The furniture and art is either Mitch Alfus (the owner) or an interior decorators work. So all this shows us is the type of flat Bowie lived in, Bowies was bigger. I had posted about the flat before I found out it was not Bowie's and I could not edit the headline. Somewhere it said that Bowie had two of the penthouses, one to live in and one for business, I have no clue if there is any truth to that.

Oh! So how many units were up there on the roof level? I'd have thought that this was the second of Bowie's two units - since it would be reasonable to downsize. I'd think this is either a third unit which was never Bowie's, or this is the second of Bowie's two units.

Oh my there's a Labyrinth joke in there somewhere.

There are 8 penthouses in the part of the building that was build on top of the old building.
When walking by I had no idea it was that big, from the street it looks like someone build a large villa on top of the building, but not that big. After posting about this flat I found some photos taken from above online, and it fills the hole top of the building in a cpl of levels + roof gardens.
In NYC all real estate sales are public record, so if Bowie's penthouse went up for sale someone would write about it, just like I thought they had done when I made the post.
