I had really hoped they'd have at least something he'd say behind the scenes of any of the new songs, such as in Where Are We Now, even if he'd just pass the camera and said something or something like that. (Or Blackstar sessions... One can dream)

Yet, we're left with a Bowie that only spoke to us back in 2006.

I have a feeling this was on purpose even though there's probably plenty of footage of them joking around etc.

i don't think you can blame the BBC for the fact that Bowie stopped giving interviews...
and i'm sure he was not keen to be filmed while under treatment.


and, out of curiosity - what kind of purpose do you believe it would serve for the BBC to withhold unseen footage?

Don't know but during the filming of Alan Yentob's Cracked Actor documentary in 1974 the BBC did record the complete LA Forum show as well as concert footage from Philadelphia.

Yes indeed - however the reason the full film of the show was never aired was because Tony DeFries wanted too much money (at least this is my understanding) and as a public service broadcaster in 1974 - before the BBC became the celebrity obsessed suckup it is now the amount wanted was just too much.

I suspect the film is either
A - lurking in the BBC archives (unless it got wiped, which is quite possible)
B - in Alan Yentob's personal archives.
My guess is that the "Strange Fascination" bootleg (aka "A Portrait In Flesh) is the soundtrack to the film, but we will never know for sure. All that can be said is that it is definitely not a tape made by someone in the audience.

Yentob filmed more than LA - check the "Cracked Actor" film - it seems at least 3 shows were filmed.

I watched the excellent BBC documentary "David Bowie: The Last Five Years" by Francis Whately.

The only thing I thought was extremely daft, rude and tasteless was Johan Renck saying that when Bowie Skyped with him and telling him about his cancer, Renck says: "He looked scared actually".

wtf?!?

That has got to be the most stupid and unnecessary superfluous thing to say! I mean, Really!!??
Maybe it is just Renck's lack of mastering the English vocabulary (e.g. he pronounces Button Eyes as Button Ice) and instead, perhaps he means that David Bowie is somewhat taken/affected by the fact that his Life is coming to an end?!
Either way, I find it really hard to believe and unfortunately Renck can say whatever he wants, because there'll never be any proof what-so-ever of the actual conversation or Bowie's facial expressions. It's just Renck's own words and interpretation (fabrication?), I say.

The last video 'Lazarus' is good, but according to me, Renck just got lucky and happened to be at the right place at the right time and shoot the very last video of David Bowie.
However that does not give him the right to blow a bomb about "Bowie being afraid", just to attract attention to himself. That is so low and ungentlemanlike. No respect!!

Yes, I do know David Bowie most certainly was human, but what I am trying to say is that I dislike the vulture mentality of trying to make headlines/a scoop out of the death of David Bowie. That's how I feel about it.
I am pretty sure that Bowie made jokes and probably laughed about it.
I also think that Iman or Coco would be the only persons he would show any fear to, but I am only guessing.

The Renck Facebook has not been used since 2012…  otherwise I'd post this on his page.
Hopefully this will eventually find its way to him?!

And like someone else said either for them to release it at some other time or milk it, or Bowie himself told "them" never to release any material of him off the set.

i seriously doubt anything much got filmed at all behind the scenes after bowie stopped appearing in public pretty much after 2004. and if so, probably only for private purposes. if he would have wanted to promote 'the next day' he could have done tons of things, but he didn't. nothing at all, actually.

which i find totally admirable too. as much as i'd like to see the same kind of thing as you, at the same time it would be disappointing in that respect. a mystery is always more interesting, no?

ps - regarding the BBC and milking it - i don't doubt they would, but having seen their lame 'Bowie at the BBC' thing i doubt they have anything much left in their vaults... that thing seemed almost desperate to milk things, with nothing to show for it at all. kinda sad, given the standards the BBC have been setting otherwise for their documentaries.

I've got zero problem with that. Of course he was afraid - what else? And yes I think it is appropriate for people who worked with him to mention it. In fact it is a key element of Blackstar and Lazarus.

I was quite disappointed with the programme ('disappointed meaning only 99 out of 10, instead of 100 out of 10!!). For a programme labelled and built up as 'the last 5 years', there was a hell of a lot of 70's footage and build up to the so called last five years. ...and that's assuming the Reality tour fell in the last five years?!?!?!?
I wanted to know so much about 'the last five years', like it said on the tin. yeah I know DB had a publicity lock down, etc, etc....but I wanted a 90 minute programme about  'the last 5 years'.
Given the angle of the show, and it's fairly predictable target audience, did we need all the Ziggy/Major Tom build up...again.

so touching those scenes of Lazarus rehearsals though. If we'd had 90 minutes of that sort of poigniancy I maybe couldn't have coped with it anyway !!!


and as a post script..does Renck seriously think that NO-ONE believes that video was a depiction of the poor soul David Jones leaving us and his alter ego fighting time to get out one more piece of work before he goes back in his box. You're in a world of one on that one I think Mr R.    (mind you, I'm still utterly, and immovably, convinced that China Girl is about drugs, so what do I know!?!?!)

oh well, the beauty of being a Bowie fan for 40-odd years. There's 20 answers for every question...and there's plenty of questions.
