(What follows is a forum thread version of a request I made on the BowieStation shoutbox. For the most part, this is the same as my posts on the shoutbox, which I have since deleted. Some revisions have been made in the wording from the original shoutbox posts.)

Does a recording of the April 2nd 2004 show in Ottawa, Ontario exist? And if so, can it be uploaded here? It was the only time I got to see David Bowie in concert. The venue at the time was called the Corel Centre; venue has changed names a few times since, IIRC the venue's name is currently either Scotiabank Place or the Canadian Tire Centre.

The pending BowieStation release of an audience tape of the Montreal 2003 concert has piqued my curiosity enough to come forward in making this particular request.

What follows are some of my recollections of the show:
I was one of the few people who actually knew The Motel (which was part of this concert's setlist), per usual when it was played it on the 2003-04 shows , David made the semi-accurate joke that only a few people would know this particular track from Outside. This was also one of the few Reality concerts where Blue Jean and Modern Love were played consecutively, and if memory serves, they were played early in the setlist.

David was very chatty on this show, and in relatively good spirits. I can verify the BowieNet report that he carped about the decreasing amount of the branches on the stage set, along with his usual jokes at Gerry Leonard's expense during the band introductions. Oh, and yes, David indeed did the Space Oddity tease on his stylophone after Slip Away. The audience went crazy as he was doing this so I didn't hear David's quick tease of Golden Years (the writeup on BowieNet said he did this).

Contemporary reviews of the concert in the local newspapers the following day(April 3rd 2004) were relatively tepid/negative. The Ottawa Sun said "the show seemed tired", and that "whatever magic in Toronto wasn't present in Ottawa last night"(the previous show was in Toronto on April 1st 2004). The Ottawa Citizen gave front-page coverage of sorts, with a picture of David & Gail Ann Dorsey performing Under Pressure at the show. However, their coverage/review was also negative, with this rather unflattering headline with the aforementioned photo: "Bowie falls Under Pressure". (I mis-remembered the headline in the shoutbox version of this request; I'd originally stated the headline as "David falls Under Pressure"; their headline was "Bowie falls Under Pressure".)

I don't know if the Ottawa newspapers were expecting a theatrical spectacle like the Glass Spider Tour. In the run-up to the 2004 Reality Tour concert here in Ottawa, local newspapers in the Ottawa area stated that the last time Bowie played in Ottawa was on August 28th 1987, during the North American leg of the Glass Spider Tour.

Clearly the Ottawa papers forgot that David did a concert in Ottawa in July 1990, during the Sound And Vision tour. It's anyone's guess as to why the papers forgot about the July 1990 concert in the run-up to the Ottawa 2004 concert.

Of the concert requests I've made here, the Ottawa 2004 show is the most personal. This is on account of the fact that I was at this concert, and that it was ultimately the one and only time I got to see Bowie live.

Thanks for reading this more refined version of a request I made on the shoutbox.

Accouring to a book called David Bowie live 1987-2007 (by Wim Hendrikse) there should be a 2 cd-r set of this show. Wim doesnt have it, neither do I. Its one of the missing recordings in my reality tour collection... maybe one day....
