This seems to be an expanded version of the soundboard recording listed here as David Bowie - 1978-07-01 - Earls Court - London - England (Drifting Into My Solitude (Silver Rip) (Godfather Records GD365)is this correct? and if so what's the difference in sound?

As far as I know, "Wardour records"'s Bowie releases are ALL copies of recent torrents (or other bootlegs), so I have long ago stopped checking them out.
This Earls Court 1978 2CD has to be a copy of one of the existing torrents on this site.

V2 - I suggest you download Learm's remaster of the vinyl rip, Here:

Its a matrix of of 3 sources including the soundboard. It sounds a lot better, with more atmosphere than the original soundboard version, and is complete. With Very Good audience versions of the songs missing from the vinyl rip, dropped in. Refer to the torrent notes.
