David Bowie Documentary Moonage Daydream Picked Up by Neon, Universal, HBO
The authorized film was written and directed by Brett Morgen

Back in November, news broke that director Brett Morgen was making the first-ever fully authorized David Bowie documentary. Now, the film — dubbed Moonage Daydream — has been acquired for release by Neon, Universal, and HBO Documentary Films (per The Hollywood Reporter).

Neon will release Moonage Daydream in the United States, and IMAX screenings of the film are expected to follow. Universal is handling the picture’s international release, while HBO holds cable and streaming rights.

Described as a “feature-length experiential cinematic odyssey,” Moonage Daydream is narrated by Bowie himself and features never-before-seen footage, performances, and music. Beyond his illustrious music career, the documentary will also delve into Bowie’s work in dance, painting, sculpture, video and audio collage, screenwriting, acting, and live theatre.

While the Thin White Duke has certainly been the subject of many-a-film, Moonage Daydream marks the first project to be made with the blessing of his family. Bowie’s widow, Iman, previously explained her hesitance to authorize a biopic to Variety, saying, “We always ask each other, ‘Would he do it?’ He wouldn’t.” However, it looks like Morgen’s track record won the family over: With films like Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and Jane, the director made a name for himself by utilizing private footage to create intimate, collage-like films instead of traditional, surface-level documentaries.

With that in mind, Morgen was granted access to Bowie’s personal archives, including all of his master recordings and hours of discovered 35mm and 16mm film of his stage performances. The filmmaker wrote, directed, produced, and edited the project, while its soundtrack — comprising 48 musical tracks derived from original studio recordings — was helmed by longtime Bowie producer Tony Visconti, Bohemian Rhapsody sound mixer Paul Massey, and Ford v. Ferrari sound engineer David Giammarco. John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone led the film’s sound design.

Moonage Daydream comes on the heels of Bowie’s addition to the Peloton canon, and the sale of his entire catalog to Warner Chappell Music. Later this month, the artist’s Brilliant Adventure EP and Toy EP will be released on vinyl and CD for Record Store Day.

Considering it is 48 tracks from the studio albums, I'm not sure what value it would have to collectors.  Sure it will be another nice compilation, but I am not expecting anything new.

The Man Who Fell To Earth soundtrack album only had a photo of Bowie on the cover and people bought it.
The was-it-Subterraneans-or-not unused stuff is either not released or just pants depending on what you read.
"Like The Beatles 'Love' album ?", someone asked online.
I can't not see some kinda tie-in.

Looks beautiful and I'm sure it will, at a bare minimum, satisfy the pallet. I try not to get on the hype train but this does look like something that could be of stellar and award winning quality. It would appear they're really into making use to the video vault–much to our benefit.



My only real question and forever obsession is: what are the odds we finally get to hear "Blaze" in this film.

Ok, maybe two questions: will we hear any new "from beyond the grave" narration from the man himself?

its a fine line making a arty docu-film...stunning or crap,one thing i wonder, now clips are in this thing from Earls Court,78..will that be released?...i think maybe it wont...but i would be happy to be wrong.

Let's Dance was the entry point for a lot people into the Bowieverse.
The albums after...they were never deleted if he hated them THAT much ?
Lazyitis.
One thing I read was, it's him walking on stage...a lot ?
So if here is footage from all these desperatley wanted live shows it will be one long teaser ??
No one knows yet...

I'm not much of a Nirvana fan but I saw this director's Kurt Cobain film at the cinema and it was a visual feast. Incredible access to archives, which it sounds he has been given for Moonage Daydream.  I'm sure there will be rare and unseen footage but you will likely only see seconds of it, his style is fast cut montage, but it will be worth seeing.

From IndieWire.  Seems we are getting the full performance of "Heroes" from 1978 Earl's Court, but the a 12-minute performance of "Station to Station" was cut.  Perhaps it will be an extra, or the Estate will release the full concert at a later date:

Because it was emotional. That was never before seen. It’s 1978, from Earl’s Court. Bowie fanatics know that that show was filmed but had never seen the light of day. So when I walked into the vault, the first time I saw stacks of 35 mm cans that said “stage,” “What’s that?” And they’re like, “Oh, David lost interest.” And it’s been sitting here for 40 fucking years. And the film used to end with a 12-minute performance from that show of “Station to Station.” Sean Penn was the first person to see the film. One note was to cut that out, that I had said everything I needed to say by then. So we went back. Not just because he said it, it actually resonated. He’s the only person who had any major editorial input.
