Good day.

I hope you are well.

I just saw Moonage Daydream, and I thought it was GOOD,

very wolcome the Hammersmith Odeon with Jeff Beck video footage ;)

My Rate : 8 of 10

obviously some things were left out. What are your comments ?
what would you like to have seen that did not come out?

The legendary moment in Starman (TOTP) where bowie hugs Mick Ronson
and points a finger at you to the camera, a little more of angie,
his predictions in 1999 about the internet, etc.

Your feedback is more than welcome

Worthwhile if only for (at long, long last) an official version from The Hammersmith Odeon of 'The Jean Genie / Love Me Do / The Jean Genie' with Jeff Beck.
It's only taken 49 years.....

I would love to know what the 'Quicksand 2021 mix' is all about though.
It's a totally different take to the one on 'Hunky Dory' or the 'BowPromo' version, with vastly different vocal performance. Sec0ondly, if TV did this then he will have done the whole album in 5.1 at the same time,m so WHERE IS IT, PARLOPHONE?

I thought I would post a track by track 'First Impressions'.

Here are my first impressions, based on a track-by-track basis on the first listen through.
Some are really good, there are revelations (including an unknown recording from The Soul Tour) and a lot of filler alongside pointless edits, mashups & excerpts

01 - What is the point?
02 - A remixed out-take. Who cares. Really.
03 - What a mess
04-06 - Your list has this as with John Hutchinson - it's The Odeon, July '73 version.
07 - I never liked this when I first heard it on 'Nothing Has Changed'
08 - Another edit from the last Ziggy show again listed as by John Hutchinson.
09 - HURRAH!! About bloody time!! Worth it for this alone.
10 - Pointless - it's not even Bowie!!
11 - From 'Stage' by the sound of it - already got 4 different mixes of that.
12 - Very interesting. Totally different vocal performance to either the traditional one on 'Hunky Dory' or the 'Bow Promo' version. If TV mixed this he will have done the whole album back in 2021, probably in 5.1 as well and all at 24/96 so where the **** is it?
13 - Why? Seriously - why?
14 - Interesting. Not the same as on 'David Live' but in clean stereo from Buffalo!!
This must be the 8th November show at the NY War Memorial Auditorium, according to the DVD-A inlay of 'David Live'. I wonder (again) where the rest of this show is, and why the'I'm Only Dancing' bootleg was done officially if the whole show exists from Buffalo.....
15 - Why edit the track?
16 - Nothing New
17 - It's yet another mix of 'Space Oddity', which is just what we needed. Not! It's also a mixup of Live & Studio recordings....why?
18 - Nothing New
19 - Interesting. Fun, too. Are the BV's really singing 'real bland' at the 45 second mark??
This is a very early version too, as the words are different. It has more swing to it too
20 - This sounds live - a mono recording so could well be from the monitor board
21 - This is just a complete windup.
22 - Another live track. Probably from 'Stage'
23 - We already have this from a few weeks ago. It's issues are well known
24 - This only goes to prove that 'Scary Monsters' also exists in 5.1, because Visconti does not work in a vacuum and would have done the whole album. Again where is it, Parlophone?
25 - Why?
26 - Again, why? These 'edits' are pointless.
27 - Silly start into a butchered take of 'Lazarus'. I hate these mash-ups.
28 - Why?
29 - This is terrible. None of the snap of the single.
30 - Sounds like Montreal '83. Nothing really new
31 - A remixed instrumental. Yippee!
32 - Hammersmith '73 again, this time edited too.
33 - See Track 2.
34 - Not convinced by this one, although it is interesting that TV has also revisited 'Station To Station' tapes....
35 - I don't like the fadeout from the previous track over the start. That's not well done.
It sounds mono - cannot identify the show though, but it sounds 1995-ish.
36 - Another stupid edit
37 - Philip Glass. Again. I wondered if they would do this.
38 - Yet another edit
39 - Just what we all wanted - an edit of a remix of an instrumental out-take.
40 - Another mashup. Yuk. Station To Station meets Space Oddity meets Memory Of a Free Festival - why do this?
41 - Nothing new here, very predictable.
42 - Pointless
43 - Nothing new
44 - Pointless
45 - Pointless

My first impression was that the audio mix of the film was often atrocious. There were times when there was so much background noise... a cacophony of overlapping music and sound effects AND dialog over top of it all that can not be heard.

Next was my supreme disappointment in the "new" material. Jeff Beck at the Hammersmith Odeon. Yawn, that has been available for many years. The other previously unreleased material also has been in the hands of traders for a very long time.

Overall there was nothing new. Nothing at all. What we got were the same old video clips that have been used in the documentaries, Cracked Actor, Five Years, The Last Five Years, David Bowie and the Story of Ziggy Stardust, Hansa by the Wall, Beside Bowie: The Mick Ronson Story, The Genius of David Bowie, The Man Who Changed the World, Sound and Vision (BBC), MTV Rockumentary, VH1 Legends, etc.

Brett Morgen dropped the ball here... either that or in his access to the Bowie estate archives he discovered there was nothing new to find. Perhaps I became spoiled with the Peter Jackson's Get Back. There we DID get something new.

The only "new" thing we got with Moonage Daydream compared with other Bowie documentaries is that it was in IMAX.

He did say in an interview online he was very restricted by what he could use - not due to 'the archive is closed / restricted' type reasons, it was because they wanted film where multitracks existed.

I think that's because it's being promoted as a film with good sound, and promoted as an IMAX film firstly. He stated that's why certain moments people would expect to see are not there, or only briefly alluded to.

I noted the mix on the last Ziggy film could still be better (in my opinion) on an excerpt I saw, though the sound itself was good, however I am trying to avoid seeing much of the film until I see it in full at my local (non IMAX) cinema.

I know there are / will be things others have taken exception to - but it's the film / how it is, so going with an open mind when it comes round locally.

It looks like they handed 90 minutes of great footage and interviews to a college film student...with the instructions: Use all 90 minutes, and then use an hour to throw your own crap in.  Silent film footage?  How quaint!  Perfect for illustrating an artist who is always trying to look to the future.  Plenty of great meat in this stew...but too much stock, and not enough meat!  Meh...

As stated above he could only use music footage if they had multitracks. Would everybody want Glass Spider and Serious Moonlight tour footage ad infinitum (I like some of the music on those tours, but...).

As for the non-Bowie bits, Brett has stated that every one is something that Bowie has referred to as an interest / influence in interviews (meant to mention that before, but forgot).

I'm not his agent :) - just wanted to point these things out for a little balance :).

Not seen it myself yet, I'm sure I'll have some reservations but it is the film that's been made. There once was a book about The Fall where all the ex band members (at that time) were interviewed). It was generally well received, but of course there were some naysayers - some pointed out, well it's the only one of its kind, unless you can do it yourself.

I'm glad it's been made and looking forward to it...

Shame not more 76 footage wasn't used. Curiously there was a rare (very brief) repeated hand gesture clip in the light boilersuit ? outfit from early 1976 live.

I expect the new catalogue owners will plug the gaps gradually, as this film may well open the floodgates for more officially released visual Bowie.

We will see...

Actually I can see the longterm game the catalogue owners are playing ... any live / archive material has limited appeal in real market terms - not that much money is made out of it.

So, a big budget film that is timed and marketed well is good 'promo' for any future archive releases ... they get a new audience, some of whom will lap up such things ....

Where is the Buffalo '74 show please?
I know I have never seen it in stereo (or even in mono, come to that) and it's not on here in any form.

It's a bloody annoying collage of a 2cd set. Some stuff that is worth listening to butchered and ruined fading in and out to stuff we already have or some poorly mashed up remixed guff. Glad I listened to a 'copy' rather than wasted a single penny on this. This godawful mess has ruined any excitement I might have had about watching the film. At least I'll likely have some beers with an old mate afterwards so the evening won't be fully wasted.

What about the de-mixing technology used in Peter Jackson's Get Back and Giles Martin's upcoming Beatles Revolver?

I don't know - I have put off getting Get Back as money has been very tight, and I read there's a possibility of it being expanded to a 12 disc version! That said, I don't know how realistic that really is and when it would happen (yep I know it would cost more, but it's the sort of thing I would dream of, and my finances are starting to improve) - so I might get the 6 disc version by xnas, or for that.

As for Revolver - it's actually a box I will draw the line at. I collect so much, but there are some things I just to say too much time for too little reward. I love the Beatles, and a lot of Beatles solo stuff ... but the Revolver box is not for me, never been that struck on the album as a whole, despite liking a clutch of the tracks a lot.

I totally agree. There were shows in 1976 that were filmed.

After watching the movie I was in fact disapointed !!!
