Sound Of The Seventies: 11 January 1972

Does anybody have this?

01 "Hang On to Yourself"

02 "Ziggy Stardust"
03 "Queen Bitch"
04 "I'm Waiting for the Man"
05 "Lady Stardust"

Wikipedia suggests Hang On To Yourself is lost?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bowie_BBC_Sessions

Much appreciated. Trying to make a complete BBC sessions collection and I can't find this session*

* I guess it will probably appear at some point on a Ziggy box set!

one of my many - 'on a back ring at one' numbers too
I've two of the same set and it says in the notes

01 - Ziggy Stardust
02 - Queen Bitch
03 - I'm Waiting For The Man
04 - Lady Stardust

Other Info:  'Hang On To Yourself' is also rumoured to have been recorded at this session.
Every bootleg (and even the Trident BBC Sessions sampler)
list this track from the 11th January session which is incorrect,
as they are all the same version from the 18th January session.
The BBC has now lost this complete session from the archive.

the 18'th one's notes say

01 - Hang On To Yourself
02 - Ziggy Stardust
03 - Queen Bitch
04 - I'm Waiting For The Man
05 - Five Years

Other Info:  'Ziggy Stardust' and 'Five Years' also appeared on the 1988 'Bowie At The Beeb'
(Cat. No. CN 5155/S) set of three BBC Transcription Services discs
backed with three sides of 'Bolan At The Beeb'.

it's not lost = it just has the wrong date ?

One of the two sessions is lost - at least in terms of BBC's own recordings.

Rough, home recordings exist of the lost session and are on bootlegs.

There are identifiable differences between the tracks, mainly lyrical / Bowie's enunciation, but also tempo / manner the band perform the track in, so to speak.

One of the tracks did survive in the BBC archives I think.

It's quite funny that they erased the tape I think - very clumsy - either because they thought it was a duplicate and didn't check, or worse 'it's only Bowie' or something like that.

Not sure what I have, I know there are 3 versions of Ziggy from unknown date and another version of Lady Stardust, not the Supposed September 72 session which are just album tracks.

I'll dig them out

Thanks Steveboy, much appreciated.

It seems that it is not entirely clear what is from the 11th and what is from the 18th

I have these supposed (?) Sound Of The Seventies: 18 January 1972 from the Bowie at the Beeb CD

01 "Queen Bitch" 2:59)
02 "Five Years" 4:24
03 "Hang On to Yourself" 2:50
04 "Ziggy Stardust" 3:20
05 "I'm Waiting for the Man"  5:25

But not the 11 January 1972 tracks listed in the first post above, from which Hang On To Yourself is missing. I presume these tracks will be home recordings off the radio.

Does anybody know definitely what session is what (regarding dates?)

All these sessions are now (mostly) out, but scattered across various discs, The Deram Album deluxe edition, David Bowie(1969) expanded edition; Widith Of A Circle; Divine Symmetry etc.

I might expect the Ziggy songs to appear on the next box, but it would be great if they collected everything in one place and released that.

I'll do likewise.
They are out there but in quality ranging from 'just about acceptable' to 'dire', though.
Please see http://www.illustrated-db-discography.nl/BBC.htm for the breakdown on all BBC sessions and what they are on.
There is also allegedly a copy of 'Hang Onto Yourself' from the 'Lost Session' on the NMC Sampler for their canned BBC Sessions project, but it is actually an incorrectly labelled version from the second session on January 18th.

I would recommend the following sets:
1 - 'The Essential David Bowie' (3 discs, 'Emerged From Shadows', 'Kiss The Viper's Fang' & 'Nobody's Children'. Often claimed to be the famous 'NMC' set, it's actually a totally different release to the NMC 3-CD set.

2 - 'BBC Sessions 1969-1972' - the NMC 3CD release.

3 - 'The Rise & Rise of Ziggy Stardust' - a 4CD set consisting of most BBC sessions.

4 - 'The Complete BBC Sessions' - a fan created 10CD compilation, running from 1967-2002

5 - 'The Ultimate BBC Radio Recording Sessions 1967-2002' - a beautifully packaged 8CD longbox on the Magic Bus imprint that really shows up the official releases more than I can say.

If you've already got (3), you should look out 'The Remains From The Rise Of Ziggy Stardust', which also has the Lost Session on CD2.

thanks, that's great. I checked through that website

I note that the order they place tracks is often different to the order in which they are presented on the official Bowie at the Beeb. Do you know which orders are correct? Not that it matters too much, but if it is known, I'd rather have the tracks in "correct" order.

Can the experts here confirm the following tracks are lost - unless they are found in Bowie's vault at some time in the future?

The Sunday Show : 5 February 1970
"I'm Waiting for the Man"

"Memory of a Free Festival" (full 6'40" version lost?)

In Concert: 3 June 1971 (db discography "incorrectly?" states this as 5th June? Wikipedia and Bowie at the Beeb state it's the 3rd)
"Oh! You Pretty Things"

Sound Of The Seventies: 11 January 1972
"Hang On to Yourself"

cheers

I remember it being on this set, which was (I'm sure) a 100% British set. But it isn't, is it? Or is it mislabeled?

I don't know that one. Will track a copy down, as there is still treasure in the BBC boots: You know of course that all the officially released stuff (with the exception of what is on 'Divine Symmetry') from the BBC is in mono even though some are available in stereo?

I preferred the mono recordings on Divine Symmetry. Sounds more "meatier" (for want of a better word)
