I've been collecting all the BBC sessions into one convenience place/folder and listening through noticed that at the end of Silly Boy Blue from  Top Gear (13-05-68 ) the track fades out then there is chat with the DJ (DLT) about Space Oddity being hit only hit.

Never noticed this before (no doubt due to me not being anal about the dates and just listening to the songs). But obviously this is out of place.

The same chat is used (I assume correctly) before Unwashed on the Dave Lee Travis Show (20-10-69).

I notice the chat is after Silly Boy Blue on Bowie at the Beeb; but not on Conversation Piece.

Is this an oversight?

Maybe the Bowie at the Beeb tracks are not taken from masters (it would make absolutely no sense to have tracks recorded 17 months apart on the same tape?) but rather taken from somebody's compilation and there was little to no quality control?

i.e. nobody bothered to listen

this seems probable because the early release of Bowie at the Beeb had the same version of Ziggy on different dates. I remember contacting the record company and they sent me out a promo copy of the entire set with the correct track listing. I think later customers got a special CD with the one track.

The conversation piece version also seems cleaner with less hiss (but not necessarily better). Same source cleaned up or from a generation closer to the master?

Hiya. The chat is with Brian Matthew and is taken from the Top Of The Pops Transcription disc the recordings are taken from rather than the show they were recorded for. It is placed after SBB on At The Beeb so it is sequenced before the song it introduces if the disc is listened to in order. Rather than put it on a separate track or before the LMSBY, it's there as an Easter egg. I see what you mean though. Perhaps would've made sense to place Janine before LMSBY just so the chat could be placed on the end of Janine and therefore 'within' the same session. And yeah, the session session tracks are generally better on Conversation Piece, including count ins and slightly long fades.

thanks for that!

it's a weird easter egg - talking about the past success of a song that hadn't been recorded!

Are the conversation piece tracks from the same source or different?
