There is some info here: https://www.davidbowieworld.nl/mijn-bootlegs-2-2/tour-recordings/1972-1973-the-ziggy-stardust-tour/attachment/david-bowie-that-bot/

About half way down the page is says this...

Quote:

THIS BOY (Lennon / McCartney)
The Beatles classic , originally a 1963 B-side , was an occasional addition to the Ziggy Stardust repertoire in the summer and autumn of 1972, including shows in BRISTOL on 27 august ,Stoke on 7 september, and a couple of the subsequent US concerts.
The most commonly available recording of “THIS BOY” has appeared on numerous bootlegs, but in the absence of reliable confirm it’s exact provenance remains uncertain.
It is often said to hail from Friars, Aylesbury on 15 july, but the evidence points more compellingly to BRISTOL gig of 27 August

This has come in to question on numerous occasions and after a lot of investigation with other members and fans this is what we came to, this is an excerpt from a booklet I was going to produce.

27.08.72 Bristol, England - Locarno Electric Village [see Aylesbury 18-07-72]
Audio Source #1  -
Identifiers  #1 - "Looking forward to Bristol - My Name is David Bowie these are the spiders from mars, we've a lot of adrenalin and are going to rock’  n  roll tonight - alright"  [this is what is actually said]

Intro Music/Hang onto Yourself/Queen Bitch/John, I’m Only Dancing/The Supermen/Ziggy Stardust                          Moonage Daydream/Starman/This Boy/The Width Of A Circle/Waiting For The Man/White Light White Heat Suffragette City/Round & Round

Excerpt from the ‘concert tapes’……‘Good evening Bristol, my name's David Bowie and these are the Spiders from Mars and we're gonna rock & roll tonight all right". Instead of Ziggy Stardust Bowie plays Queen Bitch after Hang onto.   Yourself; in later shows he was to alter this again. RCA had brought out the single John, I’m Only. Dancing and tonight Bowie did some promoting:  "Our new single on RCA Records and tapes.this is called John ,I'm Only Dancing". The number is played fast and vigorously .....

18.07.72  Aylesbury  Friars    [FAKE BOWIE DIDN’T PLAY FRIARS ON THIS DATE – See Bristol Locarno] - AKA….Torquay/Bradford amongst others  and various dates                                                                                                               Audio Source #1                                                                                                                                                                              Identifiers  #1 -  "Looking forward to Bristol - My Name is David Bowie these are the spiders from mars, we've a lot of adrenalin and are going to rock n roll tonight - alright"

I listened to a bit of one of the shows last night, he does clearly say "Bristol", as Steve has pointed out.

While rock stars have sometimes got names of the towns / cities they are playing wrong, these tend to be in tossed out comments during a concert.

This is an announcement by Bowie himself, at the start of the show, eariler in his career (yes, I know he'd been going for 10 yaers, but I mean early in what we know, and he knew, early in his rising career as a 'name' performer) - he would not mis-name the city he was playing in, in these circumstances.

What more verification would you need?

The tape known as Bristol is Bristol.

That bit where Bowie shouts "Aylesbury"? Most likely in recognition of one of the Aylesbury contingent in the audience (more than likely Kris Needs).

This Boy was played on much of the Top Rank tour and a few of the US dates including the first Cleveland night and Carnegie Hall.
