Just curious - is there an accepted consensus re which was the first ever Bowie bootleg issued on vinyl / CD (and when they were issued) ?

Santa Monica '72 ('In Person') and Long Beach Arena '73 ('All American Bowie') were out first on TMQ, followed by 'Dollars In Drag' (1980 Floor Show) and 'His Masters Voice' (Hammersmith '73) on Kornyphone.

On CD, 'The Beckenham Oddity' (Clairville Grove '69) and 'The Chameleon Chronicles' compilations are generally accepted to be the first.

I replied to an ad in the NME someone selling 'Slaughter in the Air' for £20 I think [paid in postal orders remember them], I am still friends with this guy and met on numerous occasions at Bowie gigs the last being Shepperd's Bush empire in 97.

The performance you remember may be kingston polytech 72 which is my absolute favorite. i believe there may have been a 75 show perhaps boston that was issued in 75/76 called "subway" i may be misremembering

I think you're right -- I think it was Kingston Poly -- but surely earlier than 1972? (1970 or 71?)

There was also a bootleg 7" single -- which I still have -- three tracks from the Diamond Dogs tour: "Come Back My Baby" [actually "It's Gonna Be Me", but nobody knew what it was called!] c/w "Cracked Actor"/"All the Young Dudes" which, as I recall, appeared sometime in 1976.

To quote a note from Christian Frifelts 1st version of the Illustrated Bowie Bootleg file, the first ever Bowie Bootleg was

Ziggy In Concert -Berkley 1806/1807 - Santa Monica obviously
"Co: This is the first bootleg ever with Bowie !!
This is the only lp that contains the complete broadcast
including ODE TO JOY and the DJ's comments. The insert at
the front is in red and the one on the back side is in
blue. Three songs have been misnamed, MY DEATH is called
QIUCKSAND, JOHN, I'M ONLY DANCING is listed as OH LODI
and SUFFRAGETTE CITY is misnamed LUFFRAGETTE CITY!
