For those of you who may not know there will be a release of Rock ‘n’ Roll Star! by Parlophone on 14 June 2024.
A short synopsis if you are interested.

"The next in the series of David Bowie CD-based deluxe sets will be called Rock ‘n’ Roll Star! and charts Bowie’s journey from February 1971 through to the creation of Ziggy Stardust and the recording of 1972’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars album.

The 5CD+blu-ray set features demos, BBC radio sessions, singles, live tracks, outtakes and more and offers 29 unreleased tracks. Unreleased highlights include an alternative version of ‘Lady Stardust’, an unheard version of ‘Shadow Man’ and an up-tempo take of The Who’s ‘I Can’t Explain’, which Bowie would later slow down for the Pin Ups album.

The blu-ray includes the 2003 5.1 mix, a 96/24 stereo version, Waiting in the Sky (Before the Starman Came to Earth) (which is being issued on vinyl for Record Store Day) along with a selection of singles and outtakes.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Star! also contains two books. The first, an extensive 112-page tome with detailed sleeve notes, memorabilia, contemporary reviews and articles, rare photographs from Barrie Wentzel, Michael Putland, Mick Rock, Sukita and Alec Byrne, as well as new notes and interviews with Ken Scott, Mark Carr Pritchett and David’s plugger from the time, Anya Wilson. Accompanying the main book is a 36-page compiled reproduction of David’s personal Ziggy Stardust era notebooks".

There’s also a single LP black vinyl version of Rock ‘n’ Roll Star! that has been mastered at half-speed and features 14 alternates/session tracks. These are all on the 5CD+blu-ray version, in case you are wondering.

Prices rediculously range from a modest £106.28 for the Rock N Roll Star - 5CD+blu-ray deluxe in USA to a whopping £151.50 in Spain.

Rock N Roll Star - vinyl LP rocks in at 20 - 30 Quid.

Is this value for money.??... I'm not sure.
Regards.
PB

I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.

It sure is a slap in the face to the vinyl community. CD buyers get nearly 70 tracks and all the goodies while they are offering only one single vinyl disc. This has zero value to me.

I did see somewhere it was claimed that CDs are making a comeback - I think some will have got fed up with vinyl being so expensive, and original pressings from the 60s / 70s etc being more faithful to the recording as it was (depending on one's viewpoint, of course).

I know these CD box sets seem astronomically expensive, however the paraphenelia is now a big part of the cost, and for me, the attraction now. There have been Bowie boxes where I have decided I will pass as there's not enough for me. However these latest ones focussing on an album with original notes that Bowie did in planning the album etc, are ones I will bite the bullet on and get.

Look at the print quality of a music magazine that now costs £7 (ie bad), then the price of a quality book of photographs - that's a big part of why a box like this costs so much, the CDs are very cheap to manufacture. The work in exhuming the once lost tapes is not cheap either - it's a shame the mastering is still rushed. It was all over the place on the Hunky Dory box, and on the recent Who Who's Next Life House set, which contains magnificent material, they are still doing the cutting off the peaks thing. I have not bought the most recent Beatles ones (they did Revolver and I think they did Rubber Soul too) as while I'm a big Beatles fan I don't like those two albums enough really.

I don't think it will happen for them all though - the market is not there for that.

Key albums, yes it is likely, but even then I don't think they have enough relevant / listenable material for multi disc sets on that many albums.

Even with the books is the content significantly different to what we already know.

The Bowie scrapbook in the Hunky Dory was priceless to me. Not everyone would agree, I know - one person's trash is another's treasure.

I am aware the seperate book in Hunky Dory is pretty much an abridged version of the massive fanbook on Hunky Dory - the latter (the fan made book) is brilliant, but so heavy I've rarely looked at it

That one too was a package where the vinyl community was sort changed while the CD buyer got all the goodies.

You would think that with the chaos of the Brilliant Live Adventures box set that was sold piecemeal one album at a time...including the box!... that they would have learned; vinyl buyers WILL pay up. Nearly all of those sold out...including the box!... and some had to be reissued to meet demand. Also factor in  that buyers had to pay shipping on each of those albums... including the box! And yes, I did buy them all plus the damned box.

Many people have an ATMOS set-up now for home theater.  Bigger question is why this mix as well as the higher resolution mix wasn't included on the blu-ray in the boxset?

Proper setup or soundbar though?

I have proper setup, but I guess this wouldn't be as exciting to anyone who has a soundbar.  Then again, if you have a soundbar, your system isn't probably ideal for music to begin with.

@hb
did you ever hear the story of Jim Reeves 78's in South Africa ?
it was in a TV doc about him
Bryan Ferry appears in it

the waiting in the sky record was for the vinyl community
i didn't bother as there's nothing new on it
the blue-ray community are getting TWO this time round
i only know that as a helpful blurb for Bowie HQ pointed it out

Well I've ordered one, and I'm looking forward to using a PS5 as a player, and hearing it on a Sonos Arc with a pair of Era 300 surrounds and a Sub (just the one Sub, although a pair is tempting!)

It's obviously a set-up for watching telly with decent audio, but I also use it for listening to Atmos music (via Amazon Music Unlimited and downloads; Tidal and Apple also provide Atmos content) and it's great -- however, if I pipe Atmos content to other parts of the house, it drops to HD everywhere, presumably because the other speakers don't have up-firing drivers.

I'm waiting for the release of little marble that will allow me to play a hologrammatic rendition of the 1980 Floor Show on my TVC15 with a choice of 5.1 or Atmos audio mix -- hopefully it is scheduled for the 2073 Anniversary Limited Edition Little Marble in Little Box Set!

the wording used on the Ryko reissues advertising is very interesting
talking about hearing things that no one heard before
sound familiar ?

how much stuff (demo, studio outtakes; alternate takes) which is unreleased and NEW really new and would have not released so far ?
(on the Ziggy Anniversary reissue for instance)

great to have a Pin-Up material - even though I would have liked an outtake, not only The Who's cover in its original speed.
By the way, Bowie never recorded "Penny Lane" for Pin-Up ? it was a fake track by someone else ?

Is there some real outtakes (I mean some covers which would have not been on Pin-Up)
