Hello fellow fans.
First time i post here i think, hope this is correct place to ask. I tried to search on the site, but did not find anything about this topic.
I have the RSD single (7 inch picture disc) from Starman with the Top of the pops performance. Because it is a collectible i have put it for sale. Not its been sold, and i wonder about if i need to rip it before i send it away. I have the Best of Bowie DVD, it has a performance from Top of the pops, dated 14 April 1972. The box-set Rock and roll star from 2024 is at my local library, and it have the performance from 6 July 1972, like the picture disc single. But the box is a remaster. I have tried to search online, and according to AI the box-set uses the studio vocal from the album release mixed with the prerecorded musicians from the 6 July broadcast. I wonder if that is true. And i wonder which recording is on the DVD. I can not find solid prof that there was a 14 April totp performance, rather the prof of it never happening and the dating is wrong of the DVD. I am really hoping to figure out what is up and down here, was there ever more than one performance of starman in Top of the pops 1972 and how do the 3 versions released differentiate from each other? Does anybody out there know?
All the best, and thanks for any details.

on Rock 'n' Roll Star! there's two demo versions
or one
and a bit
neither is the Run Piper Run take
?
i could be wrong
there's
a Single Mix, a Dobly Atmos Mix
and a bootlegged - Starman (Backing track, 1972)
which refuses to clean-up

the
(Top Of The Pops Version - 2022 Mix)
is a remix
of a sort
with the re-recorded - back then - music
(if you believe that)
?
" and adds the lead vocals from the album version "

The date for TOTP is wrong. Here are some corrections:

28th April: Starman single released. In the old days, singles would usually take a while to gain traction and go up the chart.

Lift Of With Ayshea on ITV was recorded on 15th June and broadcast on 21st June 72. Bowie sings a live vocal over the album version instrumental (with studio backing vocals) and fluffs a line. Audio available on bootleg.

An instrumental backing track for the band to mime to on the forthcoming TOTP performance was recorded at Trident 29th June 72 (4 versions, apparently)

The actual TOTP performance was taped on 5th July and broadcast 6th July with Bowie singing live over this new backing track.

2012: The version on the Starman 7" picture disc is the mono audio from the TOTP taping, featuring live vocals, as also heard on the Best Of Bowie DVD

2022: The Trident instrumental rerecording from 29th June 72 was remixed into stereo and had the Ziggy album vocal laid over the top to create a new hybrid version. This also appeared on the RNR Star box in 2024.
