People just thought he would always be there, helping them cope.

The most common theme being expressed at his passing was how important he had been to people, freeing them to express and re-invent themselves, explore and accept their identities, or just helping them live their lives. And he did it with style and wit and charm.

And so the album sales are not just for nostalgia - Blackstar is now number one in 64 countries as people look for answers about his passing as they mourn a part of themselves they thought they’d never lose.

And so the artist who showed so many how they could live now shows how you can die.

David Bowie, dead at 69, alive forever.
