Have you ever had a problem with your PC or a problem doing something with your PC that you just wish you could save a detailed image - but not the whole screen? Or have you wished there was an easy way to get a small video of something off your desktop? Wish no more.

In a Windows 7 PC (I do not know if Vista has this ability) go to Start & Search for "Snipping tool".
This is a tool built into the operating system, and once you get it in the search, right click the icon & select "pin to taskbar" so it is handy for next time you need it.
Whats does it do?
It will open up & allow you to lasso around anything onscreen you want to take a quick picture of, and save it as a JPEG or better still a PNG file. Very, very handy and much better than pressing "Print Screen" & messing about in PhotoShop or Paint to trim it to what you need.

The other great utility is called "LiceCap" - run a google search for it or go look on the website of the folks who make Reaper. http://www.cockos.com/licecap/
What does it do?
Once launched, you get a resizable window & a record button. Size the window as you need it, and when you press "record" you will be prompted for a save location and it starts recording everything you do on that desktop until you press STOP. Another very handy tool that you will find invaluable - it's recorded files are animated GIF and very small indeed so ideal for posting when you need help on something.

I'm running W7 and just tried that snip tool. Fucking brilliant. Thank you Neil. It will save me ALOT of time in my "other" online life.

Nice one Neil.
I knew about the snippet tool, although I forget to use it and hit PrtScn usually.
LiceCap I didn't know and it looks really useful, I'm often showing people how to do things and that is going to save a lot of explaining and typing :)
