I think "David Bowie Is" is one of the essentials... Plus, David Buckley's "Strange Fascination" - it was the first ever Bowie book for me.
Oh, and don't forget "Live in New York"! It's just pictures, but I've always loved 'em!

I got a nifty little book as a xmas present. It's called rebel rebel by Chris O'Leary

It catalogs Bowie's songs from 1964 to 1976. Only had a flick through it but seems to go into great detail. Where, when, who, how & why

My favourite books are

Alias David Bowie by Peter & Leni Gillman

In my opinion this is the best biog covering up to the mid 80s (published in 1987) & until recently you could pick it up for a few quid

see
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alias-David-Bowie-Peter-Gillman/dp/0340402903/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1455958658&sr=1-1&keywords=david+bowie+gillman

The other highly recommended book for me is

David Bowie: An Illustrated Record by Roy Carr & Charles Shaar Murray

see
http://www.amazon.co.uk/David-Bowie-Illustrated-Murray-Charles/dp/0380779668/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1455958867&sr=1-2&keywords=david+bowie+carr

Unfortunately both are now hard to come by & expensive

For me there's only 2 "Must Have" :
-The Complete DB" by Nicholas Pegg (I've found mine for 1,5 euros on used condition): no pictures, just infos (700 pages !) about all the songs, the albums, the tours, the films, etc... All the infos are valuable and it's a lot of fun too (Pegg has his own opinion about the songs and albums...)
-"Any Day Now" by Kevin Cann, a day to day from 1947 to 1974 with a lots of pictures, infos (I'm still waiting for "Golden Years" by Griffin wich must be a day to day from 1970 to 1980)

Then you can add
- a biography ("Starman" is my favorite, "but "Strange Fascination" is great too), but they have all the same problem : the life of DB is telling in depth until the mid 80's, then the last 20 years are usually set aside really quickly...I'm sure the next years will see the realese of more "definitive bio"
-a book of photographs ("A life in pictures" is great, the book about Duffy is pretty good too. I don't have the money to buy the Genesis books about Sukita and McCormack photographs and I can wait to see the Shapiro books) but they are pretty expensive
-"David Bowie Is..." (sorry, I'm french and I don't know how to translate "Catalogue de l'exposition" in English) : it's expensive but worth it for the pictures and the texts (especially the parts about the England from early 60's and the work of Bowie)
-"Low" by Seabrook : a little book about the album
-"Bowie In Berlin" who tells the story of Bowie (and Iggy) in facts from Los Angeles 1974 till New York 1979

The Bowie Bible as some like to call it

Nicholas Pegg "The Complete David Bowie" is a must and being upgraded is being reissued Oct this year, the last edition was 2006 so should be a great upgrade (I've pre-ordered on a NZ online store, so you should be able to be find local supplier)

*Album by Album Paolo Hewitt is up to date concludes with The Next Day an interesting read about and story to each Album

*Kevin Cann  "David Bowie A Chronology" mine takes you up to Let's Dance (just unpacked box of books packed away in '84 so may be later pressings dating further into the future)

I enjoyed The Pitt Report when I read it (which was quite a few years ago). Understanding that its written from a certain point of view, its still an interesting glimpse into the early years when Bowie was ultimately far less sure of what he wanted to do - and ultimately how his wings spread and he grew into the person that needed to go in a different direction.

I'm partial to "Bowie: Loving the Alien" by Christopher Sandford.
