Setting aside Paul Buchanan’s warm and upbeat rendition of Ashes to Ashes I found the remainder of the David Bowie BBC Prom was massively underwhelming.  A star studded cast promised so much more than they delivered and some (yes Marc Almond I do mean you) were just plain awful.  Almond’s off-key crooning of Starman was a real low-light and prompted me to think about who might have been a better custodian of that number.  And then it came to me!  That particular arrangement of Starman would have been more capably and aptly performed by Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek) dressed in full star fleet uniform and delivering the lyrics in narrative form – now that would have been worth hearing and I think it would have made Bowie laugh!

Then I started to think what about an album of spoken Bowie covers with a classical background (as some sort of homage to his own work on Peter and the Wolf) might include.  I haven’t got it all mapped out yet but side one of my ‘wish list’ selection for that album would be:-

Starman – Patrick Stewart
Rebel Rebel – Grayson Perry
John I’m Only Dancing – Sir Ian McKellen
Young Americans – Barrack Obama
Life On Mars – Sir Richard Attenborough

Any other ideas?

The best part was the audience singing Let's Dance at the end

I liked a lot of it, it was too bad that the compositions that Marc Almond was singing to was made with no thought to how he sings or properly to how anyone sings.

I thought Neil Hannon did well and there were some mildly daring song choices such as "After All" and "Lady Grinning Soul". Philippe Jaroussky was by far the worst for me. All in all, anything is better than that horrible evening at the Union Chapel in January...

I like Neil Hannon but he doesn't even know the lyrics !! He must to read them : seriously ?!

Besides Neil Hannon, John Cale and Marc Almond (this guy is out of control), who are the other people because I don't know them ? In fact, I know why : there are people of no interest to me !

Stargaze ? This band (Berlin-based, genre-defying musicians' collective : is it a joke or something ?!) remembers me the band you can find in 70's tv shows... in worse !

"David was very proud to see this for sure" : I respect everyone's taste but it's a bold and daring statement... :D

The only way to me to pay tribute to his words and musics is to make available his sound and vision works : tv appearence, unrealesed songs, live recordings (audio and video), paintings, photos, etc.. at prices that common people will be able to afford them. Not the ultra rare books which cost 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000 euros which are only for the elite ! (but it's an other thread).

Paul Buchanan is/was the leader of a wonderful band, The Blue Nile. Not the most productive of combos, they've released 4 albums in 32 years, but please try them, they are very good. Anna Calvi is a pleasant solo artist who supported Morrissey fairly recently. As for the remaining performers I am as lost as you!

I agree 'The Blue Nile' were great......'tinsel town in the rain' is a beautiful track. Paul Buchanan 's version of ' I can't give everything away' was lovely, very moving.
I love Soft Cell too,  but Marc Almond struggled a bit I thought, bless him.

The Blue Nile... It's ringing a bell to me : maybe I have a lp from them.

Anna Calvi, I will try.

I love Soft Cell too and Marc Almond's voice that's why I'm disappointed...

I have to say, I have been a fan of Soft Cell and Marc Almond for a lot of years now, but his voice was not it's powerful self, which was a shame.

I particularly enjoyed Girl Loves Me (feat. Laura Mvula & Paul Buchanan, it was a very good tribute to David.
