So, I've been going back and listening to the Outside Tour - and it's hard to imagine being in the audience during those early shows.

Like, at the moment - I'm listening to the first show from the tour, Sept 14th... and it's funny to think:

"The Heart's Filthy Lesson" would've only just been released a few days prior, "1.Outside" wouldn't be out for about two weeks. There really isn't the internet - so there's absolutely no way anyone's heard mp3's of the new songs, and the only moderately recognizable song the band plays during the main set is "Breaking Glass"  8o

"The Heart's Filthy Lesson" needed a less 'industrial' dance mix
they all kinda sound the same

I was at the show on the 14th.  True that most of the set was unknown, probably the most recognizable song was Scary Monsters.  Under Pressure had not yet been added, and Teenage Wildlife although a great song was not known by the masses.  Just as Bowie wanted it!

Saw three shows from the outside tour (and two from the earthling). Great performances. And great live hand. I never understood why many consider Glastonbury to be a back to form performance. Imho he started playing greatest hits again in 1999 instead of believing in his new stuff

Glastonbury wasn't even his best show that week

It's also nuts how, for those September shows - the setlist has an 'encore section' which always included "My Death" "Nite Flights" "Jump they Say" and "Joe the Lion" ...and it never quite works out. "My Death" is a bit too quiet, slow, and long

But by the first week of October, it's abandoned - "Joe the Lion" moves earlier in the setlist, Teenage Wildlife gets slotted to the end (perfect) and 'My Death' and 'Jump' go away for a while

...I do think "My Death" eventually worked later on in the tour, but man... when did "Jump they Say" ever really work live?

Re: "there's absolutely no way anyone's heard mp3's of the new songs."

FWIW, I remember having a highly-generated cassette of the new album a few weeks before the Hartford show, so the songs were circulating among the hardcores. It was still breathtaking at those early gigs -- I went to several of them -- just how relentlessly he was throwing new material at an audience that for the most part did not want it. Probably the bravest act of artistic integrity I've ever seen.

I've been listening to "Outside" shows too this month, and feeling very grateful folks were out there making superb recordings of them. Can't believe that was thirty-one years ago!

And keeping to his pledge from five years earlier not to play a single past hit!

that's not quite right. During the press for The Sound and Vision Tour he said he was not going to play any of his old SONGS again.

Which of course he did.

And depending on what you call a hit, on the Outside Tour he played plenty of chart singles:

Breaking Glass
Diamond Dogs
DJ
Look Back In Anger
Boys Keep Swinging
Under Pressure
Scary Monsters
Jump They Say (which was recorded after his "promise" )

And obviously, all of the old songs he said he would never play again....

Point well taken! You'll get no argument from me. And of course that "no old songs" pledge would give way even further in the future.

I suppose all I'm saying is, a big chunk of that Hartford crowd could have been mollified with one or two "classics" -- even just, say, "Young Americans" would have left folks feeling pretty happy. Instead they were served up "Breaking Glass" and "Jump They Say" -- great songs, no question, but not exactly the sort of thing that filled out setlists in 1990! It's not quite Dylan circa-'79 playing nothing but gospel tunes, but it's in that neighborhood.

And that's what makes the "Outside" tour so special. It plays incredibly well on my stereo in 2026, thanks to the magic of bootlegs. It's a pleasure to hear them, and to have a place here to talk about them!
