Does anyone have any info on the 'off the record' Bowie music transcription books ? These are note-for-note transcriptions of each instrument on bowie's hunky and ziggy albums. I've had them for years and just recently 'discovered' them again. Someone put a lot of work into these intricately detailed transcriptions and I'm hoping more albums were transcribed.
The Hunky Dory book is published by EMI music publishing Ltd. The Ziggy book is published by Barnes Music Engraving Ltd.
Any info on these books or any other would be much appreciated.

There is an official Low songbook, but I'm uncertain if it includes all of the instruments. I'm afraid I don't know anything about the HD or Ziggy books. Wish I did.

I've got those books as well, I've had them for years myself. The 'Off the record' books were reprinted by International Music Publications in 1991, but I've had mine for a lot longer than that. Very detailed as you mentioned, complete scores really. Guitar Tabs for all guitar parts, Bass tabs, Drum tabs, Vocals, you name it, it's all there. I'll dig them out and see if I can find out when they were first printed. published etc.

I've got 5 in total, Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane.

Someone on Amazon UK is actually trying to sell the Space Oddity one for £249.00!!!

I know that they're pretty rare nowadays, but not that rare!!

I've managed to get two (Space Oddity and Ziggy) on eBay.  From memory, £20-25 each.  Have been watching/bidding on some of the others, but yeah, the prices can go pretty high (nothing like £249, but some have gone for between £50 and £100).

Have quite a few of the other sheet music books (from memory, Diamond Dogs, Station To Station/Low (both in one volume), Stage, Scary Monsters, Christiane F, Let's Dance, Tonight, Never Let Me Down, Tin Machine, Black Tie/White Noise, The Next Day and Blackstar).  Mainly keeping an eye for Outside (which I have seen for sale before).  Would love to find Young Americans, but I'm not convinced it exists.  But all of these are conventional piano/vocal/guitar books.  Some of the compilation books do go a bit more detailed, but I reckon the five "Off The Record" books are the only full scores readily available.


Don't blame me, I didn't do it!

Yeah, Ive got most of those as well man.

£20-£25 is generally around the price I've seen the Off The Record' series sell for, and as you said, they can go for up to £100.
Incidentally, there's also a listing on ebay for the Hunky Dory one for £230!!

The 'Off The Record' series was actually from Space Oddity up to PinUps. I've seen the PinUps one on ebay a couple of times but the sellers starting price was £150. Needless to say I gave it a miss!

I've been through this hunt myself, and I've found a solution, though it will cost money. The British library has a copy of every book ever published, including these. So it turns out you can order photo copies of these works, for something like £30. Maybe you have an equivalent service in America,
