Today French photographer Philippe Auliac has tweeted that a ★ expanded box set is due out very soon, after some more digging it looks like it will feature 3/4 discs, the album, unreleased tracks, videos and possibly the Lazarus original cast recording from NYTW.

I would be really happy :D to see a 4 disc box set with:

Disc 1: Blackstar original album release
Disc 2: Blackstar outtakes/demos/5 demo songs recorded for the followup album
Disc 3: Bluray (or 4k) video of the Blackstar singles videos, and a complete pro recording of Lazarus at the NYTW.
Disc 4: Lazarus original NYTW soundtrack

Songs we know that are unused from the Blackstar sessions:
- When Things Go Bad
- No Plan
- Killing A Little Time
- When I Met You
- Russian Black Man Of Moscow
- Somewhere
- Wistful
- Duet with Lorde (Bowie at least recorded his part)
- 5 demo songs from Dec 2015/Jan 2016
Maybe more as Bowie and the band reportedly recorded 15-16 songs for Blackstar.

Alternate versions
- Blackstar (The Last Panthers OST version/mix)
- Blackstar (original 11+ minute version)
- Lazarus (Radio Edit)
- I Can't Give Everything Away (Edit - no fade in)

Heard about this (hinted) in Uncut magazine. I might scan that. Donny McCaslin mentioned two songs: "Wistful" and "Somewhere". "Wistful": "a ballad with a singer and just a piano player playing this arpeggiated thing. Beautiful".

I agree with Spaceboy89 - the video disc should be a Ultra HD '4K' Blu-ray. If not that, then it should be a Blu-Ray.

But I suspect it will be a DVD, like it was 1997.

I would be really happy to see Blackstar stay uncontaminated exactly as it is.  Final release, two days before his death, let it stand as a tribute without tweaking.  As soon as you start making an expanded edition out of it, you dilute what it stands for.  New material - new release, not spoiling the existing one.

And I'd really really hope to never hear "No Plan" again, no matter who sings it.  Atrocious song!

Don't blame me, I didn't do it!

Totally agree with you ! I can be interested in new material but Blackstar must remain Blackstar !

I look forward to the extended release, I want to know what he was doing and if it is close to the standard of Blackstar then I am a very happy man.

I hope that the music from the sessions will be on its own CD, not stuffed on the end, I hate when they do that, but I trust they will after all he want as many CD's as possible, so it looks like good value.
I don't think this will take anything away from Blackstar. Blackstar is a strong record all the way through, unlike The Next Day that was very uneven, I think the extras will stay themselves like all the extras from Reality did, to me anyway.

With The Next Day I recall it as the quality of the video was lower than what was online, lets hope they get that right this time.

I agree I don't think having a bonus disc with b-sides will take anything away from Blackstar. With The Next Day he tried to cover too many rock periods in one album, like it was a blend of everything he had done before (except soul/jazz) but forward looking. I'm just glad we got 2 final albums - imagine if his legacy had ended with Reality 8o nobody complains about some of the terrible late 60's/early 70's demos.

I am quite looking forward to this, I would prefer the album as it stands as one disc and anything else on other discs. A hires or vinyl release would make me really happy...

I think a speckled splatter vinyl release would look beautiful - with blues, greys and blacks as the base colour, then pigments of white, grey and yellow (as a sort of stars at night colour scheme).

4k Bluray would be prohibitively expensive and would sell a minimal amount because the UHD Blu-ray (as it is called) requires a $70,000 authoring system plus all new encoders for another $15,000 and the resulting discs will be incompatible with older players - the player (and display) will both need to be 4k capable (or UHD Bluray - same deal)
Much better to do a proper scan of the film at "normal" HD as almost all 4k to date is uprezzed.....

Whilst on the subject it really is high time decent editions were made of the back catalogue.
Never have I seen a catalogue so badly managed.

Billboard have vaguely confirmed that the Blackstar deluxe box set is on it's way. They've said it confirms the rumours from Tony Visconti (back in the spring) are true. Also info from Mark Guiliana "

Quote:

Along with being Bowie's first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 upon its January 8 release, Blackstar will be (as rumored by its producer Tony Visconti this spring) the subject of an expanded box set due by 2016's end featuring videos, a possible Lazarus cast recording from the off-Broadway play's brief run and unreleased tracks. "To be totally honest, we recorded twice as many songs as are on the finished album -- so I never imagined it as a whole, but rather, individual masterpieces," says Guiliana.

Thanks willb3d.
That is very interesting and tells a lot about why we get so little that is exciting.
This way of basically just repacking the music we already have bought, together with not caring about the sound quality, apparently Bowie agreed with Visconti that brick-walled/compressed sound are wonderful.
Unless someone else take over, then what we would actually love to see released wont be released before the core Bowie fans are dead, if it ever does. Who are they saving it for?
Dylan got it right when it comes to sharing his music.

Looks like David's version of that song is to be released!

David Bowie’s Final Recordings Set for Release on Lazarus Cast Album

David Bowie’s final recordings will be released next month. Bowie’s studio versions of “No Plan,” “Killing a Little Time,” and “When I Met You,” which were recorded with the ★ band and co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti, will appear on the second disc of a new cast album for Bowie’s Lazarus musical. Until now, the songs have been heard only as performed by the cast of the musical, which premiered last year in New York before scheduling a run in London.
