DB is on the cover of this weeks RADIO TIMES (uk) and there is a 5 page feature regarding the new Francis Whately documentary "Finding Fame" scheduled to air on BBC2 tv on Saturday 9th February.
While making the new documentary a clip of  Ziggy era Bowie was unearthed from the 'Lift Off With Eyshea' pop programme originally broadcast on 15th June 1972.

That would be Lift Off With Ayshea (Brough), who was the host. It was the TV debut for the song Starman.

It's unlikely to have the iconic visuals of the TOTP version that we all know and love but it was first and was thought to be lost!!

I really hope so . The information i read in the Radio Times was a bit vague, it's certainly not a master tape that's fro sure, and quite likely just recorded directly from the screen. I was blown away when they discovered the Jean Jeanie Top of The Pops a few years back, fingers crossed it'll be of the same standard :-)

My take is that the documentary producer believes that baking the video tape won't save it, so they went ahead with the press release to hype it now - knowing that the outcome (if they were to wait for it) would be disappointment.

Variety Feb 1 says this:

...efforts to include 1972 footage of Bowie as Ziggy Stardust on ITV music show “Lift Off With Ayshea” will go down to the wire until the documentary’s debut on BBC Two on Feb. 9. The footage was believed lost but has been recovered. “All I can say [is] it is being restored as we speak,” Whatley said. “I’m hoping the ‘Top of the Pops’ performance of ‘Star Man’ will be replaced by ‘Lift Off With Ayshea’ before we transmit.”

OK, didn't watch Finding Fame at the time, and just did.  Annoyingly, however, it was running late, so cut out during Hutch talking a couple of minutes before the end.  Well at that stage, no sign of Life Off With Ayshea.  Do I assume it didn't happen?

Yup, as expected, they kept the Top of the Pops clip. Hardly mattered, since they only showed a few seconds of it anyway.

Really good documentary though. The way they manipulated the still photos was wonderful.

Really?  I thought it stretched very little material way too long.  Probably a respectable 45 minute documentary there - particularly given how much of it at the end, covered the same ground as the original Five Years.  A bit like the weather in Britain this time of year - dull in parts...
