Has anybody worked out where the version of Hearts Filthy Lesson on the new liveandwell was recorded? Spotify states Phoenix Festival '97. The original CD states Phoenix Festival '96. The newest version is different to the CD but it's from neither of those festivals.

I don't know, have always been too engrossed in listening to the song.  Same question has been posed on the Illustrated Biography forum, so if the answer doesn't come through here, worth keeping an eye open there.

Don't blame me, I didn't do it!

Where can I listen to this?
It seems possible that there are just overdubs and extra production that are fooling you, but I'm pretty familiar with THFL performances. I might be able to find it if its different than those other 2.

Hi
I read somewhere that the lyrics are slightly different ie 18th July 1996 bootleg and Liveandwell.com cd "The hearts filthy lesson."
Liveandwell.com 2020 remaster "its her hearts filthy lesson."
20 July 1997 bootleg "its the hearts filthy lesson."
dont know if it makes things any clearer or not.

The lyrics are different, and the outro is also slightly different (same lyrics, but emphasis on different parts)

This is really different! It may take some tries. Of course we know that the entire tour was taped at the desk, so it literally could be any performance but it seems odd that they'd get this one wrong on the label. Give me a little more time and I'll nail it down.

I don't know if you have the original Live and well cd. It has the old website on the enhanced section. I'm pretty sure it said something about which shows were recorded; which were a handful.

My guess this is a late date version, both Reeves and Mike are deviating a lot from their original parts. I wouldn't be surprised if this is from the Rio show where the recording of Spaceboy's from.

I've been going through them chronologically. haven't found it yet!
Rio is one of the last nights, and conspicuously missing from any tapers grasp.
Its also from I'm afraid of americans opened stadium show. damn. really nice touch.
I'd love to see that list of shows that were recorded. 5 years later they taped everything, a 2 cam stable video from the desk.

Anyway, just listened to all the November tapes. It isn't any of the ones that are out there. Its definitely the way Reeves played in those shows and he didn't do that in October or any other time, and the ad-libs db does aren't in any shows. Almost like he recorded new vocals for this. I'm going with your (CosmicJive's) Rio argument. That's only one typo, I can forgive them. Maybe they swapped it out for this version at the last minute.

If it's any consolation, the rest seem to be correct.

Can I have more please?

The original CD (which was *not* a bootleg) is much louder than the remastered version, so I will have to take them both into a DAW and equalize the levels - will do this & post back.

The Digital Web copy I have states this....The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Live at Long Marston, Phoenix Festival, 20th July, 1997)...

Update on this issue...having now listened to this version @ https://www.bowiestation.com/torrents-details.php?id=573  Long Marston, Phoenix Festival, 20th July, 1997 I think they are a good comparison.

PB.

I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.

Close but no cigar..

I compared the 'The Hearts Filthy Lesson' on Phoenix boot from 1997 with the versions on the 1996 Phoenix boot, The version on the ORIGINAL LAW CD and also the version on the of the new stream of LaW, and can confirm Atfiield's comments (over on IDB Forum) regarding the lyrics in the first verse:

'18 July 1996 bootleg and original Liveandwell.com cd "The heart's filthy lesson."
Liveandwell.com 2020 remaster "It's her heart's filthy lesson."
20 July 1997 bootleg "It's the heart's filthy lesson." '

I think the 'new' LAW version is from the(unavailable?) Rio show in 97

This is correct. Look at the parenthesis vs the brackets in the way they are listed.
It was just a copy > paste mistake. If you listen to the way Reeves and Mike are playing its definitely from the South America leg and again, look at the [] vs ().

07 - The Voyeur Of Utter Destruction (As Beauty) [Live from Rio de Janeiro, Metropolitan, 2nd November, 1997] [2020 Remaster]

04 - Hallo Spaceboy (Live from Rio de Janeiro, Metropolitan, 2nd November, 1997) [2020 Remaster]

02 - The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Live at Long Marston, Phoenix Festival, 20th July, 1997) [2020 Remaster]

Rio was chosen for the performance, I'd guess, but they pasted in the old info from the original L&W.com

The drum & bass stuff is the only stuff that lasted from the Paradiso recording because it was still fresh. I like the late USA drum & bass stuff better, but its all good. David was really tired by the end of the tour and the vocal performance of Rio is really great to get in this quality. Wish I could go buy the whole show!

Shame it is - yet again - streaming only. Parlophone are starting to get seriously annoying with this new act of theirs, as it seems to be penalizing those of us who prefer replicated media.
Not only is the new 95 one again streaming only, the physical release of the 97 acoustic show was so bloody limited that if you blinked you missed it.

I guess despite the fact I have spent more money than I care to think about on CD, Vinyl, High Res downloads & Box Sets over the years Parlophone obviously think that folks like me are not worth the trouble. I am beginning to get the hint too.....

It definitely sounds like one of David's better vocal days. I wonder if we'll ever get the full show. I doubt it, but I'm hoping.

Also, since its multitrack, its possible that the vocals were re-recorded after the fact.
