How many people here believe this story or is it Jones manipulating the media to add to his punk mythology?

It's an old story that was first told when Bowie was still alive.

If there had not been an equipment theft at that time, Bowie or someone connected to him could have easily denied a theft took place.

Steve Jones made amends and apologized to Woody Woodmansey for stealing his gear while on his radio program "Jonesy's Jukebox".

there's an entry further down on that youtube thread from Robin Mayhew, insinuating/confirming it really did happen.

Funnily enough my self  & a few friends  who were  spotty teenagers not kleptomaniacs went to see   Mick Ronson at the Rainbow &  carried  out a similar  "heist" :-)  though  we were just curious  & not looking to knick anything that wasnt nailed down  to make money. To  my recollection  one of us got a  guitar strap & lead  & personally  I grabbed some  picks off the top of an amp, they were nothing special in themselves,   I thought they were  trevor bolders as they were from  his  side of the stage  but  from what I have seen  he doesnt use  a pick ,  so have  no idea who they belonged to  ! !! | I It was surprising how easy we could  just walk in the back door after the concert .

Lol, great story. Well, Bowie himself, maybe as a refernce to Pete Townsend, condoned a bit of pilfering: "Well, the bitter comes out better on a stolen guitar"

The story first surfaced way back in the late 1970's - 1978 IIRC - in the Melody Maker which carried an interview with Steve Jones & Paul Cook titled 'I was only in it for the piss-up & the birds after the show' or similar, and Jonsey tells the story there for the first time.
