I really don't like the author Alexander McCall Smith. OK, he can convey a plot fine and list the events that happen, but it's like reading a story written by someone who found chartered accountancy too exciting a life.  I don't want to be in his world, or the world he's telling us about.

David has a (fully deserved) reputation for being pretentious.  His seventies and eighties interviews were full of pointless twaddle and a determination to show off his reading list (at least he chilled out in the nineties!).

So we went to see Lazarus, fully expecting it to be pretentious tosh, and were in no way disappointed.  It's basically two hours of someone's bad dream.  Don't make even the smallest attempt to find a rational plot or realistic storyline in there - they're not there to be found.

But it was great to watch, great to feel and great to listen to.

Small theatre (250 seats) and small stage.  Even then, the stage was split in two laterally, with the band behind a wall, with a big window at each side, which had blinds that could be raised or lowered.  Between the windows was a big panel, which turned out to be a video screen (but the actors could make their entries and exits behind the panel.

Visually it was fantastic.  Most of the action was on the stage - occasionally the panel was used as well.  Back projections were used, which were sometimes behind the band, sometimes on the closed windows in front of the band, sometimes including the panel, sometimes contrasting with it.  You simply didn't know what the next scene was going to look like.  Particularly striking were when Valentine stabbed Zach against the screen, where the blood appeared on the screen then spread out - and also towards the end (I think when Valentine was singing Valentine's Day) with Valentine all in black, blinds down, black blotches appearing on the screen that gradually engulfed the entire stage in black, then the blinds opened and black balloons poured out.

The acting was very good, the singing was excellent and the band were shit hot.  Great to hear some songs that David hasn't done live - It's No Game (No 1) both sounding and looking brilliant (with one of the actresses, probably Lynn Craig) dressed as a geisha and fighting with Newton while delivering the Japanese lines.

So well worth the trip and great entertainment.  But don't ask me what happened, because I haven't a clue, and I don't reckon the actors had either!


Let's see what I can do with the audio at the weekend - the only thing I need to take some care with is that the aircon was a bit intrusive on the dialogue at times.
